[#1886991]

I'm due to start the winter commute and thought I'd try a softshell and for health reasons (migraines) I have an aversion to getting hot.

Anyone recommend a waterproof soft shell under £100?

Thanks

The Gore Phantom N2S was/is a favourite. (dunno if it's still made) Endura do a couple that are pretty good (stealth?) DHB the wiggle in house brand do a couple as well that look like good value...

These, as Onion suggests are rain resistant largely, rather than waterproof

And you can still get hot in them...look for something with ventilation or windproofing only on the front (I have had success with running gear, for some reason this is out of vogue in cycling circles it seems)

Yeah the Stealth is good but can get pretty hot depending on how much effort you're putting in. Phantom is semi-waterproof and a bit cooler and easier to open arm zips etc. if needed.

The OP doesn't want to get too "hot". Soft Shells are designed for maximum vapour transmission and are primarily therefore windproof. The Endura Stealth range (I have the tights) are very, very warm (ans sweaty) and I wouldn't classify these as a Soft Shell.

I accept the fact that "Soft Shell" is a loosely-defined term. I'm applying it here as it was first coined in the outdoor walking/mountaineering world.

Just got this for the road:

£68.95 - not waterproof though - water resistant.

rode it back last night (off road) in very warm weather with a std t-shirt underneath (to test its breathability) - I sweated but wasn't unbearable - not the weather to wear it but seemed nice - thin but very windproof

i suffer from getting very hot when riding and used the Gore Phantom jacket a lot last autumn/winter/spring.

It is nice and breathable which makes the biggest difference to me, the back is jersey fabric rather than windstopper which helps control temperature. this can make it a little chilly when stopped or in really horrid weather, but i can deal with this to not burn up all the time.

Endura Windchill might work, roubaix on the back/underarms and pit zips so it's not super warm but is still weatherproof enough for reasonably bad weather.

Oh I forgot I got a Altura road top that fits the bill last year, no reomveable arms though (they don't work for me).

I prefer my Gore Contest to my Phantom - better fit, less bulky, and I never take the arms off the phantom anyway. IME, both are *very* water resistant, I've never been wet through one, and they've seen some horrible weather. My eVent jacket rarely gets used now.

I rarely take the arms off the phantom, but when trying loads of different gore jackets on i did discover how different the cut on them is. For a gentleman with a rounder figure, the phantom fit much better than the others.

Also have a windstopper gilet which could offer what you want for your commute.
