What's the difference/benefits from long/medium/short cage rear mechs also if I'm running 1x10 which one souls I be using?

Which mech you spec is dependant on the maximum socket size and the maximum capacity required. If running one by ten, the maximum you need will only be small. All you need to do is check the much of choice will fit your cassette. Shorter cage types should fit just find.
