Have just fitted a new Hope BB, but am not sure how tight to tighten the locking nut on the drive side crank. If I tighten it too much the crank wont spin freely and if I loosen it, it is making all kinds of funny noises in the granny wheel. So, how tight do I need to tighten it ?? And no I haven't got a Torque Wrench, so descriptions please.... ๐Ÿ˜•

You are meant to fully tighten race face cranks on to the hard stop.

Sounds like you've not set the spacers on the bb or cranks correctly

I've got some Race Face cranks and have just had to send my hope BB back after the bearings were shot after about five months of summer riding.

They replaced them for free (top service), they even called me up to see if I was over tightening them, suggesting maybe I take out one of the small spacers (that sit between the D/S crank and the bearing). I won't be doing this as when I lost the little black spacer in the past the cranks fell of constantly.

Putting the cranks back on this morning there is no way you can get the cranks tight enough while still being able to spin them freely.

I'm going to try sanding down one of the BB spacers a little bit to give a little bit more room.

I'd be interested if other people have managed to sort this problem. Good luck!

Orange 5 has a 73mm shell so you have two spacers too many. Also worth getting the BB shell faced back to min tolerance specced by Race Face(0.25mm undersize)as anything much over this can cause preload and premature wear of the bearings.

Use the red and black spacers on the spline.
