Done it! Two pairs + an XTR bottom bracket!

Just a heads up for those going more blingy. Merlin have 2012 XTR brakes for £300 inc rotors...

I'm having second thoughts about the XTR BB - someone told me that the only differences between xt xtr and saint is the amount of sealing? Had problems with grit getting in the bearings already with my xt.

Delivery is generally pretty quick. About 4-5 working days.

I am so tempted by these...

What needs to be bought to shorten the cables (and swap levers around)?
Hoping just Mineral Oil and some tubing.

Will the olives in them already be reusable?

Can older 9 speed XT M770 shifters be made to work with the iSpec mount?

I was going to ask the same: will we need new olives to switch them around?

you can get away with reusing olives, but if it doesnt seal then you need to replace them. For the sake of a couple of quid Id get some olives in ready for the swap so that you dont have to wait for them to be able to test your lovely new brakes 🙂

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=1801

EDIT its infuriating that theyre so expensive. I was lucky to get 10x sets as a bulk buy of eBay once. Same with powerlinks, got 10x for a fraction of the cost of 10x individuals.

Still haven't had a reply about the pads.

One thing to bear in mind with these brakes is they use a different hose insert to the older brakes. So if you plan to cut the hoses down you actually need Shimano part number 8JA 9802. If you just intend to swap them and use a new olive then the older part number that Stoner links to will be fine, just use the olive and discard the insert. Or you could buy just an olive, part number 8H2 0400.

Anyone thinking of buying the XTR brakeset just to be clear that these are the 'race' set not the 'trail' set i.e. you don't get the free stroke adjustment.

huh?

it says M988 which is the code for the trail lever

race and trail use the same calipers, the M985

the race levers are M985

not sure why you think they are the races

Just buy the olives from Rose! They're only 90p!

Edit - and delivery times are really quick. I think my brake pad order (which are also really cheap from Rose) arrived in 3 days.

On the Rose website it looks like a copy and paste error as both the Race and Trail brakes say M985 in the header. The products themselves look correct to the descriptions.

Cheers mister p.

Wish I'd've thought of these things before I ordered. I was worried that there'd be a rush on the brakes and they'd be gone before we could all import a load.

The BR-M596 brakes use the new brake hose SM-BH90 so you need the silver insert, part number 8JA 9802.

In fact if you look at the link to the olive and insert on the Roase website it actually lists it as "Attention! Not compatible with Shimano brake cable SM-BH90"

Bought some olives, will just use the old insert (unless I lose it, which isn't out of the question)!

nmdbase -

The finned pads are one-piece but you can 'normal' pads without the fins.

Another bonus is that they are now symmetrical so you can switch them around if they are wearing unevenly.
Although the finned pads are labelled L & R but not sure why. Airflow?

I was a touch worried as i'd put up the PSA over the weekend before they could ship the brakes and thought afterwards that with the rush, I might end up getting none.

Good news, they are in the country according to the DHL tracking info.......

Looking forwards to getting them, but haven't got any olives (or inserts) which was a touch silly. Have to find some of the correct ones from the uk.

Thanks Entonox, what I wondered is if it came with the finned pads or standard ones/

You should get the olives and inserts in the kit. I did with my XTRs from Germany.

Surely we should get olives and inserts in the box?

Edit .... Just seen above.

nmdbase - My SLX came with sintered finned.

My friends XT came with the same.

Both ordered from different German online shops.

I've jumped on the band wagon as well.

Possably a silly question about swapping the levers around, the above posts say all you need is the olives but wouldnt you lose some of the oil in the hoses and need to bleed them as well?

I expect to bleed them when swopping but can't see why you need an olive unless you shorten the hoses.
The olive will be compressed onto the hose at the insert so unless shortening the hose it should be fine.

The oil shoud stay in if you cut carefully and keep the hose upright.

Couldn't resist a quick peek. They come with normal pads - not finned (OE brakes I guess).

Levers are so tiny, I can see why somebody above runs them outside their shifters!

Nice free mug included too.

Excellent, mine should be here today too.
Got emailed a 10quid credit note from them for the Facebook voucher.
Plus a free mug to go with my bowl?
Can't be bad 🙂

BTW, for those that asked, I'll be doing the hose swap (have done it a few times before), so will do photie instructions for posting up here.

I'm in too. To be honest, even at full RRP these seemed great value. £125 a pair is mental.

DezB - I'll probably be making use of those instructions, cheers.

I've jumped on the bandwagon as well! Couldn't resist at those prices.

I'm assuming the adaptors haven't changed to mount the calipers? Hoping to re-use the Shimano ones I've got already

Mine arrived also. They come with one spare olive and connector (you only need to buy one if you're planning on doing new ones). Can confirm non-finned pads. Levers are tiny tiny tiny.

And a free mug, and two packs of free sweeties. And my XTR BB.

I've read a good plan for the hose swap without bleed is to take the bleed block out, engage the lever a little to push the pistons out, then when reattatching the hose, use a spacer to push the pistons back in, pushing fluid through the system until you have a meniscus at the end of the hose.

Make sense?

DezB - good lad!

So for those of us that want to shorten the hoses, even if I'm careful with the cut I guess there would be some leakage. Can I just put a bit more fluid into the hose before reconnecting?

continuity, i have used that trick of "burping" when Ive shortened hoses-this is on used brakes so already have some piston movement to push back with. Worked fine every time.

thebunk, see above, if youre careful you wont even need to top up fluid. This has been mentioned in a few brake bleed threads, if you forum search "M775 brakes" youll probably find a few blow by blow how too guides as these brakes seem to cause a few headaches.

Mine arrived today.
I went for the silver ones.

They came with a mug and a couple of bags of sweets.
Amazing price and service, I'll use them again!

Now to fit them...
