Was looking for a budget down bag for spring / summer bikepacking as my synthetic one is too bulky and saw that sleepingbagoutlet are doing the Vango Venom 400 for £119. Go Outdoors 10% price match makes it £107 which is pretty good so I grabbed one.

I have a 225, a 300 and a 600 so I quite like the Vango Venoms 🙂

Can't justify a 400 as well though. There are a few bargains around as they've been replaced by the Cobra.

Hi Simon,

the price on these 2 is similar so what would you recommend for spring / summer bikepacking if you were to choose between the Venom 200 or the Planet 140 ?

TIA,

Johnny

Cheers, Frank

would the Hoolie 2 ETC be worth the extra £25 over the Hoolie 2 ?

ETC porch is great on wet trips - but you do incur a weight penalty. I personally leave rucksack outside in a plastic bag on the hill. On a proper campsite I prefer porch/ETC.

Do look at a Vango Scafell 200 - same weight, a few cm taller and wider, better made and better customer service for £89 at the moment...

Funny you should say about customer service. I picked up a a Hoolie and a pole stressed snapped during the garden shake down assembly. Emailed them and still have not had a reply in over a week

Ok, thanks for that - think I’ll go for the Scafell then - where did you see it for £89.99 - was it Leisure Outlet ?

Either of you have any thoughts on the sleeping bag question too ?

This is 6 years ago.... However, I unwrapped 20+ new tents, half Vango half Tera Nova / Wild country.

Not a single fault on the Vango's and the two bust poles (user error) we replaced that season were posted out within a week as single sections and very low cost.

Terra Nova, two of the tents had significant stitching issues which they shouldn't have been sent out with. It took a month of ignored emails and calls before I posted them back. The repaired tents now had lost a few mm's at the seams, leading to odd inner hanging. No apology and refused a discount. Those two tents and one more had inner falling apart at the end of one season. They wouldn't sell us pile sections, only full poles.

Vango/F10 kick TN/WC arse when it comes to value and customer service.

Where do you bivvy / camp?
Spring in Scotland is rather different to Spring in Cambridgeshire...

I'm a believer in really good sleeping bags. Mine is 24 years old, I'm looking at getting it restuffed with new down again, the shell is ok. I'm a tent = down for warmth Vs weight. Bivvy = manmade filling.

will only be doing May to September - and new to it so will be starting off easy but had planned to go down, and no bivying

"Venom 200 or the Planet 140 ? "

I'd say Venom 300.

It's May now abd I had frost on my car last night. A 5c comfort rating is more realistic for May and Sept IMO.

went for the 200 in the end, seeing as it'll be light stuff I'll be trying out - can always upgrade to a heavier one if I venture further

managed to pick it up for £63.75 here - listed price was then discounted by £21.24 at the checkout

Thanks all for info
