Frame and Carbon fork. Although yeah a headset would be nice. And you can buy the full bike for £699.

Off topic from the other discussions that are going on.
I've just put my 105 5700 levels on and correct me I'm being stupid but I'm going to need longer brake cables than the supplied ones aren't I?

Does anyone had any recommendations for some reasonably priced ones?

I ordered some goodridge outer priced per meter from CRC for the front, already had enough SRAM outer for the rear, some spare stainless cables I had knocking about... Quite impressed with the goodridge outer actually.

Just finished mine...

Alfine 11 with Versa. Chain tensioner is way too loud, any hints?

Rack, Light and mud guard are waiting for some small parts to arrive by mail. First short ride was lovely so far (coming from years of mountainbiking 😉 )

TY

Chain line is Alfine default (42,x or something)

Without the pulley, it's silent. I'll just ordered the Alfine tensioner to try.

loving the london road, good & versatile - grippy tyres fitted but rolls well.
How's your LR/commute - cookeaa? send email to profile..

These complete builds are looking nice. I'm so close to finishing mine, just cables and bar tape to go! Hoping to get it sorted by the weekend so I can take it out for a quick spin.

It's going very well actually FBW, I've used it to do the Kennet tow path a few times now and I've used it for some mixed on/off-road type rides around Ufton/Mortimer/Silchester ways, and took a bit of a detour via Greenham Common - Woolhampton on my way home the other week.

I sort of end up riding along on the roads just looking for opportunities to dive off into some woods...

Riding it offroad it sort of reminds me of my first couple of MTBs, rigid, nippy fun ot zip about on al sorts of surfaces, nothing like the comfort and grip of a modern MTB, but that's not really the point is it...

The 35C nobby nicks are OK, they roll better than I expected them to on Tarmac, can squirm a little offroad, I will have to try and run them tubeless soon I think.

The Gearing is OK, still using the 34T ring, which is good for climbing but I've not yet actually needed to go all the way up to the 32T out back, not really worried about spinning out but a little more top end would be nice, So I still need to change that, but there's no rush it's more of pootle than charge! type machine.

I have reverted to the fixie for commuting this week as it's a bit drizzly (Guards) and the road route is still a solid 15-20 minutes quicker each way...

the LR is going to be brilliant for riding round here come winter, especially the odd night time on/off road blast I reckon, the sort of thing I used to use my SS MTB for...

Reckon we should organise a West Berk's/South Oxon chapter STW Gravel ride soon...

Edit:

[img] [/img]

Here you go, Nonchalantly leant against some railings down by the Kennet...

cookeaa, as an Oxfordshire-based non-London Road owner, you missed this (or maybe you didnt)

http://cycleclassics.co.uk/white-roads-classic-sportive/white-roads-classic-sportive-course-details/

gpx route on the site too, I think, to follow for free. Chilterns version of Strade Bianche.

I did miss it, but I like the look of the route, I've picked up the Ridgeway from Streatley before but not followed it that west far, or looped round Lambourne Downs, I think I might just try and find the time to do it anyway,

Cheers....

been watching the tdf.. 🙂

Superb & yeah riding the rough surfaced lanes/tracks & towpath around here the bike is comfortable & quite responsive. Fitted with a 34/50t compact & smooth tread tyres is more road bias.

@cookeaa - keeping it simple with a single chainring = less maintenance, for off-road 34t is similar to riding a 29er and that range of gearing which I would think is ok. No likewise Wasn't expecting the drizzle/rain yesterday and this morning but not keen on mudguards in summer as a rule though! (probably fit about end september ish)

Great link; white road sportif and route info. keen to ride that!.. been doing lots of riding over Compton,Aldworth,Goring with "workmates team" - good idea cookeaa to set up a "gravel grouprides syndicate"

I did the White Roads Classic (another West Berks rider here), Scott CR1, 28mm Schwalbe One tubeless, 80psi. Slightly bumpy and the off-road stuff probably more fun on a grrrrvvvl bike but it's mainly a road route with a few byway sections.

Good event, nice and small, excellent food, prosecco at the finish, friendly people riding.

Here it is, finally finished. I blame having a 10 month old daughter for the delay
[IMG] [/IMG]

Shimano 105 5700, Deda post and stem, FSA omega compact bars and wheels and discs off a Boardman cx comp that I got a good deal from a fellow forumite on. Took it for it's first outing today to work and back on a mix of road, parks and gravel and must say it was great fun, makes me want to ride like a hooligan!

First post, Hi all!

Been reading this thread intently as I've just ordered myself one of the last £150 frames that they had which I'll be building up as a winter roadie with some possible light touring duties, basically it's to become my main bike so my Tarmac can become my 'sunday best'.

I read all the issues people were having with the headsets and I did some digging, the SHIS ID number for the headset appears to be: IS42/28.6 | IS52/40

I've found a few options for headsets that should fit that are cheaper than the FSA option, hopefully it might help somebody out:

Cheap shop brand:
On their ebay store

Richtey Comp: Top and Bottom (pick the ones that match the SHIS number)

Richtey WCS: Top and Bottom (pick the ones that match the SHIS number)

And the FSA one...

Hopefully this helps someone!

Also.. has anyone had any experiences with Shimano's CX77 brakes? I'm kitting my build out with 105 5700 so I figured keeping with shimano brakes would help everything work together nicely. I've heard apparently the newer brakes/levels (5700/6700 onwards) have a different 'pull ratio' from older stuff and it's all optimised to work together.

One more thing! Have people found the rear brake works better when you run a full length outer to it? Thinking it might be worth doing for the rear brake and mech as this bike is going to be going out whatever the weather and my club have a habbit sometimes of using the kind of tracks you probably shouldn't take a road bike with skinny tyres!

The Frame is designed to use full length outer/hose for the rear brake, make sure you get non-compression outer...

I am using full length outer for the rear mech you can piggyback it on the brake ties then tape and zip tie it along the Chainstay, doesn't look very neat, and you are left with unused cable adjuster bosses at the top of the downtube...

Sounds like a good option, cheers! I notice PX do rolls of cable outer, might have to get some.

CX77s as good as BB7s for me - I use both. Latter easier to adjust tho.

Different question for othe LR owners;

Is anyone making use of the "low-rider" bosses ~1/3rd of the way up either fork leg?

I want a way to carry dry bags and that position is more out of the way. A nice minimal low rider rack or something like an anything cage that could pick up on those bosses would be great... anyone?

Aren't they mudguard drillings? Might not be in the right place for the traditional low rider type panniers (or indeed up the job of carry that sort of load).

I use mine for mudguard fittings, seem sturdy enough. SKS Touring 45s.

My LR's had some amazing trips in the last few weeks. Much of the SDW, 220mile ride Dunwich dynamo double, Hilly road day touring in wet Scotland, then Ride London @ 34.9kph average. All on Compass Barlow Extralight 38c tyres tubeless.

After messing around with 2 different bars, position of STIs and so on i switched to the well known Fleegle (been riding it for years on my cheapo city bike) ...

Somebody interested in Versa VRS 11 brifters?

People with SKS mudguards: how did you fit the rear guard to the brake bridge?

Not sure whether to drill a hole in the guard and screw it into the bottom, which I've done before on a Kaffenback. That worked but the guard snapped there soon after.

I just drilled a hole and put a solid washer under the screw which should protect the plastic a bit ....

Hi guys, what size rotors are you using on your builds? If you're not using an adaptor. Thanks

160mm rotors front and rear on mine (Spyres). More than enough power.

Bought DMC frameset and would like advice on the wheels .

current cyclocross wheels have Tufo tubulars but would like to swap the rims to run wider tubuless tyres for road and off road .

what are people recommendations for tubeless 700cc rims , able to take wide tyres ? would 29er mtb rims be ok ?

also what about mudguards ?

I'm running the stans grail rims reasonably wide tubeless compatible will take over 100 psi. Did run the stans mtb rims prior to the grail but when I put anything over 75psi the tyre would blow off.

@cchris2lou 29er wheels/rims will work fine as long as the rear axel spacing is 135mm and both wheels are QR not thru-axel. The London Road has such silly tyre clearance you probably could actually use some MTB tyres on it if you wanted to. A light weight set of 29er wheels would probably be well suited for CX I'd imagine.
