[Closed] Proper headsratcher: Are BB30 cranks compatable with STD External BB? If not why

[#5268383]

As above.. I've been offered some stupidly priced XO cranks and can't understand anything online about if they'll fit my Ti456.. Currently running XT's and Stainless Hope BB.

Any knowledge here would be great as I don't want too pull the trigger on an ornament.

Cheers

The BB30 cranks have a 30mm diameter axle and the Shimano ones will have a 24mm axle so the BB30 is too big to fit in the HT2 bottom bracket.

No. The BB30 is a press fit bottom bracket but I'm guessing that yours will probably be a screw in HT2 bottom bracket if you're using XT cranks at the moment.

Think you could use a bb30 adaptor and it would work?

Forget what i said. Will work the other way round

BB30 frames are specifically made and have an oversized BB area and take a larger diameter press fit BB cup and larger diameter crank axle. Youll know if you have one as there'll be BB30 stickers around the shell. A Ti456 is unlikely to be BB30 compatible. As Creamegg says you can get an adaptor to run a 24mm axle in a BB30 fame but not the other way, there won't be room in there unfortunately ๐Ÿ™

Actually it can be done, with sommat like this.

Bit of a bodge though, dunno if those bearings would last long, they'll have far smaller balls than a normal ht2 BB.

Can't be done, unless its a Rotor or FSA 386 crank, as BB30 axles are shorter
The Rotor bb can be used with Rotor cranks on normal threaded bb shells due to the longer length of the axle
