i've stripped the frame (cannondale caad4 hardtail) down and all that remains is a stubborn bottle cage bolt and the headset. i dont have a 1 1/2" cup tool, and 10 minutes with an improvised tool didnt budge it. question is, given that the cups just hold a cartridge bearing, do i really really have to remove them? how hard is powdercoat going to be to remove??

You could get them to blank it off. Probably only a good idea to leave the headset cups in if you're sure you'll never want to change the headset.

well i've never felt the need to change in the past 8 years and thousands of miles so no issues there!
