anyone got ideas for something that deters them in the first place as opposed to ways of getting rid of them afterwards ?

Shave your legs, it makes it harder for them to cling on.

I use deet to keep the midgies away my manly musk, but it seems that the greasy like film it leaves on your legs isn't popular with ticks either

Deet as well here. We could do with a deer cull round us as they are the main vector and I see three or four every ride.

I read something about Lyme disease and how rarely it is diagnosed/treated properly that almost put me off going outdoors at all! If there are ticks about, check yourself after every ride/walk.

Wouldn't this be a better option?

Try 'Prevent' - it is a repellent and also messes with insects nervous systems so it mucks up their bite reflex and kills them. It uses an natural extract from chrysanthemums so doesn't dissolve plastics etc.

(Mr MC posting)

genuine question for all the tick-conscious; how prevelant is Lyme disease in the UK? I first heard of it when I moved to and rode in the US in the late '90s where everyone was paranoid about it, and at that time it seemed no one in the UK had heard of it, but it seems that fairly recently UK riders are more concerned.

This study suggests we have far less than most of Europe, is this because we are an island, or through lack of ignorance in diagnosis and reporting?

http://www.eurosurveillance.org/ViewArticle.aspx?PublicationType=W&Volume=11&Issue=25&OrderNumber=1

<pedant mode> the tick is the main vector for the bacteria; deer (US), sheep (Europe) and rodents are secondary vectors that carry ticks. </pedant mode>

The avon stuff might work. Anything a bit greasy like sun lotion would probably work.
