Sorry, thats something to do with the HEP system in that there mountain, overflow or something i seem to remember,

Still looks spooky though and i wouldn't want to fall down it either...

The thing in North Wales is indeed connected with the HEP in the mountain. It's a breather hole for the massive pipes between Llyn Marchlyn Mawr at the top, and Llyn Peris at the bottom. And no, I doubt falling down it would do you any good at all...

Underwater Volcano in The Wash

Strangely that appears on my (older) 1:50k OS mapping, but not the newer stuff available on the web.

@pook: I think that's just a railway tunnel ventilation shaft - there's a railway disappearing into the hillside to the west...

I know, I shimmed up the side once and looked in. It's terrifying - more so when I realised I was on a one brick width wall looking into a 400ft shaft.
