On OS maps the black dashed lines classed as paths, are they classed as footpaths or is it legal to cycle on?

They aren't rights of way, so in England and Wales legality depends on the attitude of the landowner.

bummer. Just noticed some nice routes but they are paths...

Ride them anyway. If the landowner asks you to leave, then leave.

But if you subscribe to the "it's better to ask for forgiveness than seek permission" school of thought, then unless there's a sign on the path with a picture of you on your bike saying Keep out!! then it's fair game ๐Ÿ™‚

some are county and parish boundaries if like me a dashed line is a dashed line
