Forgive this oldie goes slightly less retro question but I've been singlespeeding for donkey's years but need to put some gears on for a planned mountain trip.
Still using my faithful 1998 26" SC Chameleon with 9 speed Mavic rear hub (SS'd with spacer kit).
So...
1. Can I mount a latest spec 11 speed cassette on the 9 speed hub?
2. Which rear mech can/do I use (XT or below level)? I'd prefer the shortest cage and most compact I can get away with? And what type do I need - 'clutch', 'shadow', 'dyna sys', blah, blah - it all means nothing to me?!
3. Planned to go say 36t front and 11-40 rear, even this will give me 23" to 85" gearing which seems to me more than enough given the old 24/34/44 12-28 from days of old was 22" to 95".
4. Front chainring type - narrow/wide?
5. Which RH shifter type too?
Thanks all.
1. yes
2. pretty sure XC type mechs only come in two lengths now, long and gargantuan. Long for single rings, Gargantuan for doubles. Just get the current version of XT (M8000 IIRC) clutch, shadow and dynasys are pretty much standard now. SO as long as everything is 11 speed, you'll have no issues.
3. your call.
4. seem to work well for those who use them. No reason why not. SHimano do a non-NW ring that seems to do a similar job. Long teeth on it instead.
5. no idea, depends on budget, brakes and compatibility.
Thanks, for the shifter - I'm using separate brake lever (old Shimano four pot) and regular bars etc so just need a standard clamp on shifter. XT level or below will be fine.
Does a SRAM GX rear mech, long cage, work with M8000 XT cassette?
You can mix and match 11s MTB cassettes no problem (lots of us running GX cassettes with shimano mech and shifter, so the reverse should also work)
I'm thinking of switching too - from 1x9 to the new SLX M7000 1x11, was also wondering about the freehub compatibility - couldn't remember if it was just the road 11 speed stuff that wasn't compatible with some older 10 speed freehubs...
Waiting to see real-world pricing on the new SLX, with 1x11 XT (with brakes) coming in around 400 bangers it could be a lovely bargain...
Seems I have the wrong mech hanger, sram requires a different hanger for canyon than shimano do.
Ooft!.
Shimano are using the 'direct mount' on a lot of oem bikes, whereas if you buy an after market shimano mech it will come with the arm fitted.
You will have a direct mount mech hanger, you just need a Std mech hanger.

It's a simpler, stiffer interface that might just steer people away for buying SRAM replacements ๐

Aye, but the shimano shifted nowhere near as nice as the sram does....
