Evening all,

I'm picking up a new (to me) 5 frame this week and it didn't even occur to me i'd need to remove the brake cable to fit the rear brake.

Is there anything stopping me just running the cable down as normal and then up on top of the swingarm?

I could use the stick on cable guides right?

You can do if anyway you like really. I have never threaded mine as i have never been totally satisfied with my brakes. I'm on set number three now and as they may be keepers I may go ahead and thread.

FYI, I have been using good old gaffer in neat strips to hold the cable to the swing arm.

Nope, you could run it along the top with whatever you have to hand. Of course this means you wont be accepted into the AOC though.

Thanks fella's.

Think i will heli-tape the swing arm and then just gaffer tape it on.

I really can't be bothered with undoing the hose and re-bleeding a brake that works perfectly.

My 5's black so i've just used black leccy tape to tape the brake hose to the swing arm, looks fine, you can hardly see it.

How is it lazy?

It's more of a I don't have the tools or bleed kit needed to do the job!

Plus I've never bled an avid brake either.

If brake isn't new I'd bleed it anyway before fitting it so may as well thread it
Avids are easy to bleed btw

Bleeding your brakes is a regular maintenance job. Brake fluid deteriorates and should be replaced regularly. If you have never bled your brakes I'm sure that you will feel the difference when the job is done.

Relatively speaking though, I can't think of a more awkward brake to bleed. Modern Hopes or Shimanos almost bleed themselves.

Regular bleeding is unnecessary unless you are splitting hoses / calipers etc.
Once a year should be plenty enough for most riders. If the system is sealed it wont absorb moisture that isnt there.
Unnecessary regular bleeding is more likely to cause problems than solve them, esp with Avids.

I'm guessing Matt24k uses Elixirs.

I genuinely don't see why people bother running the cables through the swingarm. Having done it a few times on my last Orange, I'm not doing it on this one. I can confirm that it is not only a massive waster of time, but hugely inconvenient in terms of servicing, and I've heard its louder too - not sure how you can hear a cable bumping around what with the rear end racket of Oranges anyway.

It's tidy and having to remove the brake from the bike is a very rare occurrence, so it works for me.

I didn't say i've neer bled a brake, i've bled plenty. I've just not bled an avid or bled one to fit it through a swingarm.

It's going up the swingarm as i will be getting new brakes soon and i will feed that through when i shorten it.

I'll thread mine through when I get round to bleeding them. But my elixirs haven't needed bleeding yet, 2 years amd still running fine. ๐Ÿ˜€
