Stripped my 456 Summer Season down the other night and when I took the rear mech off the tread simply turned to mush (like soft creamy phili). Think there might be one or two turns of thread left. Any ideas what to do to avoid the frame being a total write off?

re-tap to larger size and helicoil.

Any idea what size I need to go for and a decent but not too expensive kit to do the full job?

Don't bother buying a kit for a one off, take it to a good local engineering shop and they should do it for you for a small cash in hand donation or a couple of bottles of beer. Helicoils need a certain depth to work properly, they should be able to advise on best course of action.
