Hey guy's, i have a fairly new giant trance, it's an 06, the one where the shock runs through the frame. I've been using a lizard skinz shock boot but I'm wondering if it's doing more harm than good as grit/mud is till getting in there during a ride (i wash the lizard skinz every time) and possibly rubbing on the shock shaft.
I know giant do a carbon guard but i can't afford one right now unless i can pick one up second hand!
Do you guy's think it would be ok to ride without a shock guard? I guess it's just like a fork stanchion but it's in quite a vulnerable place.

I would be slightly concerned if grit is getting in under the boot, its not really doing its job, can you fabricate something like the official shock guard out of a plastic bottle or old inner tube or something?
I'd never run a shock boot, having seen the damage it did to a mate's shock! I had a Reign with a similar design for 3 years & had no trouble at all without one
well not a huge amount, but there is some wet mud that gets in there on rides like i did today.
Mmm, I reckon the boot just rubs grit into the thing. Not like the shock is right in the firing line. I'd ditch it. Nice bikes. (I have an 08 X)
We need STW Trance Tribe meet I reckon. Malverns some time this summer?
I made a shock guard for mine using a 1ltr milk carton and 2 ty raps it worked a beaut
My LBS gave me one for free, but probably because I'd spent over a grand on buying my Trance! Before then, I didn't use one at all for a year with no trouble, but you can apparently make them from all sorts of household items, as suggested by saladdodger - a friend of mine cut one out from an empty pop bottle and used that to great success.
Shock boots will kill your shock shaft, get rid now!
ok thanks guy's, shock boot wont be going back on! I'll probably ride it this weekend with nothing on and then see what i can do about getting a guard.
