[#2711094]

Just experienced this in a meaningful sense (i.e. not just commuting) at the weekend and was totally blown away by it. A lovely sensation of sliding through the dark on quiet(er) roads with the stars for company.

Anyone else really into this?

What lighting solutions have folk come up with to get them through the night?

trout light dont need much power IMHO unless you are hitting massive speeds or it is an uneven road

Yup... It's great..

I'm often out at 04:00, as I don't sleep well at all.

Lights?

A DX & a pair of old Lumicycles get me by till it gets light.

Done some over winter. Really enjoyed it especailly on clear nights with the full moon.

Oh and for lights I just used a Dinotte thing and a cateye rear led that looks like a mobile disco.

I do it now and again down here in Wales, usually wait until after the pubs have closed and stick to the unclassified roads out in the hills.

For lights I do the same as parkesie above and use my off road lights just on lowest setting.

Good fun just let someone know where you're headed and roughly when you're due back.

I opted for an "old" Fenix L2D on the basis that I could always chuck in a couple of spare AA batteries. is there anything else that runs on AAs which would be an improvement?

I use an enduro battery so I have about 6-8 hours light
Dynamo is a good option

Night riding, not as such, but a long rural commute which in the winter is dark and frankly not the idyllic experience you describe.

Lighting wise I find I need/want more light on road than off, but then I have some fairly rough road surfaces in places and a couple of 40mph sections. An Exposure Maxx on full power is what I have, but it isn't enough to go at the speeds I go in the daytime - I'd want twice the juice.

In order to get some/any riding in over winter I took a few hacks out down country roads on the roadie S/S. Just a USE Joystick, Exposure and Flare. Great feeling actually, dead quiet and nice to get some midweek miles in when you don't expect to be able to ๐Ÿ™‚

Joystick! That's what I have. Not a Maxx, whatever that is.

Exposure Maxx for me but that's not the way to do it. Full moon riding is awesome. It's like daylight once you get away from the streetlights.

Descending fast on strobe on the exposure is just crazy. It's like a series of snapshots of your last few minutes on earth.

Bez: does your awesome speed induce a frequency shift, thereby reducing effective light?

No, but my awesome lack of general wherewithall induces a lack of idea about what lights I've got. To be fair it's normally dark when I'm using them.

with the stars for company.
*coughs* aren't you forgetting two awesome people?! *coughs*

Is there a better way of pointing out pot holes? Druidhs high vis jacket with dark gloves worked a treat, unlike me in dark colours. We opted for yelling but wasn't that successful *winces at the memory*

I certainly haven't forgotten the sight of you two coming over that hill, one light each and taking up the whole lane. Looked like there was a Humvee or something bearing down on me. Must have put the shitters up a few car drivers too.

I actually prefer night road riding to daytime road riding, I only really roadride alone tho. the country roads out here are deserted at night so it's just me, some tunes and a P7 torch on the bars (low for climbs, med for the flat and high on descents gets more than a couple of hours light from the one battery easily).

I mostly get a couple of derbyhire dales hours in after I finish a late shift, as the family is in bed already so no rush to get back. I was using P7 torch type thing, but over the last few month have been using the exposure flash. It's definately not got the power of the P7, but it's plenty enough for dark country roads for me.

in the good old days I used to go out and do a quick 20 mile loop in the Dumfrieshire countryside using a Cateye light. Think it had a 1W bulb. It produced a dim dot of light about a foot wide so I would angle it left slightly to mark the edge of the road and follow that.
.
Nothing better than the feeling of being out when no one else is. Although I would spook myself quite a lot with any noises behind me which were obviously wolves and axe murders. ๐Ÿ˜•
