[#3679146]

Ok some background, 15 years ago i used to love mountain biking, then came along cars, moving to London, girls etc etc. Over the past few years i have continued some riding by participating in triathlons and using my road bike. This year im determined to get back into mountain biking.
So last few weekends i have dusted off my old Ridgeback 702lx with aftermarket RST shocks [img] [/img]

nice eh, proper retro and have taken it out. However im also in the market for a nicely discounted 2010 - 2011 full susser.

I was thinking of the Giant Trance X4, Specialized 2011 pitch FSR comp, good name, nice looking bike, nice discount right on my budget however on a visit to a store i was shown the Devinci Hectik 2010 they have on offer. Looks lovely, some nice components but at the moment just outside my price bracket, so gonna try and save and if they still have it in when i get to the right amount im considering buying one.
My question is how good a deal is it?
I know full well its not actually 50% off because nobody sells anything at RRP which the stated amount is, i also found postings a year ago, certainly regarding the Devinci 2010 frame, as a full package for £1600 so the "sale" price quoted isnt actually as big as the ticket on the bike says. That aside its a lovely looking bike, i have had some tremendous assistance and advice from the retailer but there is nothing better than riders knowledge.
So if anybody has any views please let me know.

The Hecktic is more of an all-mountain/ free ride type rig, . . it'll be heavy compared to the other bikes you mention, . . if your after value for great spec you should consider Canyon.

Thanks for the reply.

Thought i should let you know that i'll be doing some AM/FR riding and some trail riding.

I'll be entering a few of the Wiggle MTB series events as well, so need a bike that can climb but also that can handle the jumps. In a old forum message on this site it was mentioned that the hectik 2010 package with the fox air rear shock could easily handle all of this.

I've been riding a pitch with 140mm air fox floats upfront and an air shock out back and it was fantastic on the trails. Climbed well for 140mm and decended like nothing else i've rode in it's travel bracket.

A lot of people have also swapped the air fork and shock for a coil and some 160mm coil forks and used it for much more aggressive riding, Think Mega and gravity enduros etc. From what I experienced it'd be pretty much spot on for that too. The pitch is a pretty popular bike on here ( Search it in the forum search tool )

If you can afford it a Standard Pitch along with a spare FOX DHX and some lyrics for the rougher, uplift sort of riding would be a good set up.

Sorry for the long post and that I can't comment on the other bikes. Hope my input helps you out.

Any bike will handle a jump if you land it right, consider carefully where you will do the majoraty of your riding being in the trade i have seen it so many times people going to long on travel and regretting it 100mm or 120 max and it will climb great be light and will be perfect for the events you list.
I have done all my years of trail centres in england and wales on an older generation giant anthem which had 85mm travel and never realy felt under biked. I have since pushed the boat out and got a bike with 100mm and i can't realy say it's any more advantage, what i have noticed as an advantage is the 29inc wheels i love em.

Thanks all. Will mainly be riding the local trails, nothing too taxing there. Will also be going to porc, tilgate park and doing some of the wiggle mtb events. Also parents in law live near new forest so will be riding the trails down there also.

I ride a Pitch, and i agree that it's wonderful! However, be aware that it's a big bike, and you need some big terrain to get the most out of it. A short cockpit and a looong wheelbase make for a bike that's very stable at speed, if a little unwieldy in tighter sections. Sometimes i find my riding buddies having to pick their way around obstacles that i simply don't notice. Unfortunately, mine is wasted most of the time, but that's why I've also got a HT.

The problem i find with the Pitch is thus; It'll storm down difficult trails, and that's great. But on a slightly less difficult trail, the bike simply flattens everything. Therefore, your interesting local trails are now longer interesting.

I'm not trying to discourage you from buying it - i love mine. But you should only consider it if the area in which you ride justifies it. If not, then perhaps you'll be better served by a Stumpjumper / Camber or similar.

I think your on the right lines with the Trance.

I've just built up an 09 Wolf Ridge (pitch type bike) & it's a no climber. At least not compared with my old Hemlock.
