[#10843541]

Having been off the bike for a while and I have been getting back out there and decided its about time for a new set of wheels. Current set are 2014 mavic crossride with 19mm int width. The 2.4 tyres that came on it are hanging in the garage with a set of faster rolling 2.2s on the bike. I'm thinking that the 2.4s could be used on the newer wider rims

So, canyon website says tyres up to 2.4 for my spectral but does that take into account the various rim widths on offer. 2.4 could be fitted to a 20 to 30mm rim giving quite a range in fitment. Wheels I'm looking at are the superstar mavic builds so 24, 27 or 30mm width. 24 or 27 can be in the cheaper 4xx series rims but if I wanted 30mm I'd have to go 8xx series.

Also if my lurking is right the 100x15/142x12 is still a common axle size?

TLDR:
Would 30mm rim with 2.4 tyre fit my 2014 canyon spectral? (fork is Manitou mattock so plenty of space)
Would the added weight of 30mm rim make it more worth while going for 24 or 27mm?
Assuming 2.2-2.4 tyres would 24 or 27 be better suited?

Ta muchly.

Edit: Any other wheels I could be looking at? No straight pull spokes are odd

30mm seems to have settled down as the new goldilocks width, unless you're weight obsessed or wanting to run 2.5 or larger then I'd go 30.

Take a look at Hunt wheels. Mine are excellent and couldn't be happier with them. I've got the XC wide wheelset as they went on my Scott Spark which already had 25mm internal rims which I've run a range of width tyres on and all are prefectly fine. They do some of the other wheels with 30mm internal though.

So 30 it is. Those Hunt wheels look like the ticket. Will see how the bank balance is at the end of the month (happens to be birthday time also) which will ultimately decide between superstar 830 wheels or hunt trailwides. £280 vs £350 so not a huge amount in it. Both tick all the boxes with the hunts being the lighter pair.

I've found 29mm or 30mm internal width for 2.3 or 2.4 tyre works nicely.  Going to wide for the tyre is as bad as being to narrow for the tyre.

JustRidingAlong  (  https://www.justridingalong.com/   ) have been good for me and reasonable in price as well

"£280 vs £350 so not a huge amount in it."

If you buy the Superstars then you also need to factor in the time and cost of having someone make them round.

As a buyer of those mavic ex 830 rims, they are a nightmare to get schwalbe tyres on. Apart from that, they're nice and strong. 30mm internal is ideal for 2.3 to 2.6 tyres, some downhillers even use 27mm internal on the rear. Anything over 30mm is overkill IMO unless you're going for 2.8 tyres.

@ajaj I'm happy enough building/truing wheels. Lest set of ss wheels I bought are 26inch and still round from factory after many years of abuse. Something to think about though.

@endomick With the discount I may look at the Stan's flow but the 830's are still on the list.

@MarkyG82 - The wheels I almost bought today were the HUNT trail wide at 30mm they looked perfect for my needs. I then spotted a problem, they only come in Boost (29er anyway) just watch out for that unless your bike is boosted, my frame isn't 🙁

@johnjn2000 the 27.5 come in non-boost. Looks like 29 only come in boost.

There is a line on the site that says about wanting something custom. Give them a shout and see what they say.

@Marky had a chat and they said they might consider it if they get more requests. Did you go for the trail wide 30's in the end? They do look pretty decent for that price.

Just replied to your thread! Doh!

Not bought any yet. Birthday end of the month so waiting for money from various family members to pay for them.

3 options so far:
Hunt trailwide
SS stans flow
SS Mavic 827 or 30 (27 is still a massive jump on my current set and saves a bit on weight over the 30mm version.

I guess I need to figure what my current set of Superstars are to see what increase I will get. As you will see from my thread I am having many other compatibility issues. Hasn't the bike industry done a good job of creating a need for new things 🙂

So, have the dough and ready to spend.
Options:

Hunt trailwide £350
Superstar with stans arch £315
Hope pro 4 with stans arch £453

My heart says hope as they are what they are but will I notice the difference? Are the trailwides too wide at 30mm? I don't like running mega wide tyres. Probably won't go much wider than 2.4.

Basically, are the hopes worth the extra c£150? SS discount runs out tomorrow so I have 24hrs to decide.

Don’t forget to consider free hub noise - probably the thing you’ll notice most. I’ve always been partial to Hope.

I don’t think the hopes with Stan’s rims are worth the extra. For that sort of price I’d want Hope’s with DT Swiss XM481 rims - in which case they would be worth the extra imo (it’s what I built myself last year).

I’d be tempted to go with the Hunts I think.

Edit - on the noise front my Hunt road wheels have a very loud freehub - might actually be louder than my Hope Pro4’s on the mtb and definitely louder than the DT Swiss 370 hubs on my hardtail.

Thanks all. Went for the hunts for good returns and easy setup/good value. First modern wide wheels with proper tubeless. Looking forward to some mega comfy grip.
