[#12941292]

I'm looking for a new smart watch and was hoping to get a Garmin one. The question is, which one....? The range is so confusing.

I don't want to spend mega bucks, but I want it to be able to track my walking, steps, heart rate etc when not on the bike, and then I can add these details to the Garmin Connect app. When I'm on the bike I have a Garmin Edge 530 to take care of all that. I currently have a Fossil smart watch which records everything onto Google Fit, buy I can't get this data into Garmin Connect, so I end up with two sets of data...

Any suggestions?

Garmin venu is a good option.  Smart watch with added sports related functionality.  The new version 3 is imminent (leaks all over the internet right now).  It is more than "a cheap thing to try out" but not mega bucks like an apple watch.

But if you only care about the very  basics, the older forerunner 45 can be found heavily discounted (STW members zone discounts for a start if you have that).

One of the older Fenix?

I've a 5plus and it still does everything I need it to.

Garmin instinct. Relatively cheap, does all you have listed, long battery life.

I have had a Forerunner 235 for the last five years and it works for all that. Decent battery, notifications from my phone, picks up ext HR and sensors from my bike and records decent enough data.

Cheap enough too.

Not an exciting video but maybe what you need.

I have a 255s and it's does everything I need but could be a but much for what you have described.

I picked up a discounted 55 using the STW members discount. Did everything I need.

Only annoyance is that the third party watch faces you can download don't seem to have anti-aliased fonts so they all look awful. I just use the standard watch face.

Depends what you want to do with it.

as an extension of an iphone or Galaxy phone, then apple or Samsung watch.

Mapping ? Then you're sadly tied to Garmin - and kore pricey ones like a Fenix 5 or higher, Forerunner 955 or higher, or I think some of the higher ££ 'epix'  (which can get very spendy).

Do.you want music on it ?

What battery life do you need? Both for 'daily watch' mode, and in GPS-on modes ? Typically on Garmin, Polar, Suunto, more ££ = more battery life. Some watches have too short a battery life in GPS mode for the stuff I do (inc..full 'iron' distance triathlons, and as I'm not going to win any of them, need the battery when in GPS mode to hold up for 15 hours (I'mnot actually quite that slow, but I want some margin as I age!)

But if its as a sports watch with GPS and a multitude of different sports activities to select can give you a few of the basic  phone functions like message notifications... i'd buy a Polar watch instead.

Polar = None of the garbage flakey constant software updates that cause as many new faults as it fixes old ones (rinse and repeat until they abandon supporting it)  and the Polar Flow app is infinitely better. And the hardware seems more reliable  too.

I've had a few Garmin watches in the past decade or so..rhe 910 was great..except the baro alti would go wrong (Garmin are renowned for that problem across all their baro based alti watches).

The 920... Best thing ever (except the baro).

Since then... seems like a bazillion unnecessary features and functions has been prioritised over reliability and nailing the core stuff. 935, 945, all took 1-2 years constantly revising software to get to work properly as intended.

My 955 has had a plethora of software updates in the year or so I've had it. At each update plenty of people report yet more (different) faults.

In between all the Garmins, I had a Polar Vantage M.  Very reliable !  I passed it down to  my daughter for her (mainly swimming). And picked up the Garmin 955.  Whilst the 955 has some better aspects (the multi-band and multi system GPS is fast to pick up and pretty accurate etc).  I think the swim recording is more reliable / better picking up things like end of a length on the garmin)  I'd defo not have bought  it at full RRP (I got it about 40% off).

For me... if I was in the market tomorrow for a new watch, I'd be seriously looking at the Polar GritX Pro (their rival to the Garmin Fenix). I do triathlons and fair bit of open water swimming, but not bothered by having music on my watch or aftermarket watch face designs etc).

Use the Health Sync App to connect your Garmin data to Google fit

I use it to sync Samsung health

I did have Strava linked too, but I unlinked that to stop duplicate data

I’ve a Garmin Vivoactive 3 which I bought 5 years ago and I’m genuinely surprised that it has lasted this long for a plastic-cased watch. I use it as my daily watch, phone alerts etc as well as an activity tracker for running, cycling, walking, kayaking. Refurbed Vivoactive 4 is £150 on Amazon.

Family members have had various but personally think garmin instinct is the right combo of useful features vs stuff you won’t use. Profiles for various sports (indoor swimming isn’t very accurate though), heart rate, not too big, very robust so able to smack it without it scratching or breaking, even has maps although you have said you have a 530 (not convinced maps on watches is a useful thing)

This is almost always the answer.  and usually only about £50 on ebay/marketplace. IIRC the vivoactive 3 is basically the same functionality but in a less rugged package, and a color screen etc so it looks more like a "smar****ch".

Pro's

Does all the basic smar****ch tracker stuff.

Battery life is long enough that unless you're tracking all day rides (it'll do about 12 hours) then you'll get bored after a couple of weeks wearing it 24/7 and put it on to charge for the 20minutes or so it takes.

It's rugged, I'm a serial watch smasher yet somehow it still looks  fairly new.

Cons:

The original one that you can pick up for £50 is lacking on the "Smart" front.

No garmin-pay

No phone (it'll answer/reject calls but you still need to either get the phone out or have a handsfree), no dictating messages, etc.

I bought a couple of aftermarket straps and they interfered with the electronic compass.  So if you want to change the strap get some plain old leather or fabric ones, not the ones with metal Garmin quick connect ends.

I've got a similarly old VA3 sat in my watch box as a backup for my Instinct (which is plenty of watch), whenever I charge it up and use it for a day or so I'm surprised by how well it's aged still talks nicely to the connect app, tracks HR and without GPS will live for a few days. I keep meaning to eBay it off but it wouldn't fetch much.

If you're not bothered by aesthetics or changing watch faces and want battery life get an instinct (there's a few Instinct Fanbois on here now), pretty much all of the Forerunner line will do what you want also. But if you just want something that's more of a smart watch with a few fitness features rather than a full-on fitness watch I'd look at a 'VivoActive' (3/4/music) or a Venu/Venu SQ (which are a bit nicer looking IMO).

Possibly try a cheaper used/refurb one off eBay/Amazon before spunking all the cash for a brand new one, you can always flip them on for minimal losses.

I asked a similar question a couple of months ago.

I used the members discount here to get an Instinct Solar 2X.

I am very happy with it, and am yet to find anything I wished it did but doesn’t do.

I charge it Sunday night for a couple of hours to 100%, wear it constantly and it lasts a week easy.

This week I’ve done 7 hours of riding, a walk and a workout and it’s Friday night and I have 57% charge left.

I don’t think the solar does a great deal unless you are outside a lot, but the battery is big.

Oh and if you find one you like the look of, go to DCRainmaker.com and check the review of it there; He's covered most Garmin watches, normally in excruciating detail...

If you think the Garmin range is confusing wait till you get the watch itself.  I had a Forerunner a year or so back, one of the worst user interfaces I have ever experienced, very poorly designed and so much unnecessary faff.  There was a lot of amateury third party stuff available on it as well, which just made it worse.  I sent it back and got a Polar, which to me is better in every way, but especially in terms of user operation.
