Morning all,
I decided to try out my new shoes, Giro Privateer R, on the commute to work today. I usually wear an ageing pair of Specialized Tahoe. I'm riding a Day One single speed with Shimano SPD trail pedals.
I would swear that my calves, hamstrings and glutes were being worked harder in the new shoes than the old which is kinda weird!
The thoughts I've had so far are that the shoe stack is different meaning a comparatively higher/lower saddle height and that the cleats are likely in a different position, again potentially changing the relative saddle height.
Would cleat fore/aft position make a noticeable difference to how my legs would feel?
Thanks!
The fore aft position of the axle is the premiss behind the massive platforms from Pedaling Innovations so it's possible but it's most likely just in your head.
Too tight, they need to bed in a bit. Loosen them off for a few hundred miles.
weight perhaps, do the new ones weigh more?
Are the cleats in the same position? It sounds like they might be further forward causing you to ride on your toes more.
Have you removed the string holding them together?
Foot position and stiffness?
Cleat position would be my first thought. Stack height maybe as well but that'll be marginal.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.
I tried moving the cleats to the most rearward position and it felt definitely different and have now moved them slightly forwards and it feels much better than it did.
The cleats are now in a very different position from the old shoes but then the shoes themselves are very different too!
I might look out my old road shoes soon to see how they feel in comparison too, they always felt absolutely fine position wise.
Thanks again!
