Hi guys. Impending trip to BPW start of next month, on the verge of needing a new front tyre anyway so gonna stick a winter one on before I go.
I see Maxxis shorty's mentioned quite a bit on here, is this is exact one you'd recommend?...

I think the wider sturdier 2.5 version is better on the front in all but pure mud.

Shorty 2.5 WT is good!

I'm going to put one on the classifieds later today. Email me if your interested.

I run a shorty on the front but not sure I’d pick one for mostly trail centre riding.

I wouldn't choose a fatter shorty personally. Also they not fabulous* on rock if you're riding a lot of centres.

* they're not great (there are better rock tyres) but they're also not that bad either.

I'm running one as a winter tyre but in fairness i will be using a Mary today at BPW. But the Shorty will go back on tomorrow, for non trail centre riding as it sheds mud so much better.

(Just to clarify - I still have a spare Shorty in Maxterra. I'll be running the MaxxGrip

2 Maxxis tyres and 1 schwalbe I'd consider for winter front tyre duties.

If it's mostly armoured trail centre then a minion dhf 3c. This is what I've gone for.

If it's a mixture of trail centre and natural (muddy) than the magic Mary is supposed to be really good. One of the guys I go riding with described it as 'feeling like cheating' as it's so good.

If it's all natural stuff thats muddy then a shorty. Think the cut spikes can be a bit bendy on hardpack trail centre stuff from what I've heard.

Thinking about it, my bike came with a minion dhr2 on the front which some people like. I found it a bit unpredictable on the trail centre stuff I mostly ride with occasional washing out. Maybe I wasn't leaning it over hard enough early enough. It was good on natural muddy stuff though (it's now on the back of my bike where I'm liking it a lot more).

Joe's list is the 3 front tyres I use, year round. More DHF in summer, more Shorty in winter. Recent convert to the Mary, which does sit between the two, and is impressing me for mixed conditions.

Have you considered a specialized hillbilly grid?
