(noticed a few pro's at dalby running single ring)

Was quite surprised to see this. Some pretty steep climbs there and some longish flat bits too. I'd have thought the advantages of a double with a wider spread of gears on that sort of track would have outweighed the benefits of a single. With a single they'd need t mash bigish gear up steep climbs and also spin quickly enough on the flats... guess that's why they are pro's!

I ran a single ring for the NPS at Dalby in April. It was fine, although I must say on my 5th time up the climb from Medusa's I wouldn't have said no to a double!

Blimey, I was hitting the granny up there, still quicker than running though.

Most of the pro's there seemed to be running doubles, with some single rings. Didn't see anyone running a triple. Not that surprising though.

36-36 bottom gear still isn't that far off what a double offers, you're only talking about a gear and a bit higher.

I have 2x10 33.22 104/64BCD with 11-36, finding the 33 too small.

what chainring do I need to get (i.e is this the middle or outer ring?) so I don't have to change the front mech how big could I go or would I have to change both rings.

help appreciated

As far as I can see (without trying it, 3x9 here) the only driver for change is the 11-36 cassette.

Aye, that's what I reckon too. Considering doing a bodged 11-36 using the Shimano 12-26 one but it seems pretty obvious they've both chosen to restrict that as a "unique benefit" of 10-speed just to try and get people to make the jump. Unimpressed. Shimano spent a little effort on telling people 11-36 was impossible on 9-speed ๐Ÿ˜›

To the OP - 2x9? its my prefesrrred option - 22 36 chainrings - you only lose a couple of gears at the top compared to a triple adn hardly ever need to shig ft the front - 36 chainring for flat and downhill, go into the 22 for any significant claimb abd use the bottom 5 gears. I certainly see no need for a triple with all its overlapping gears

njee - i suggest you don't say anything to really annoy GW - that was a very mild flaming from him.

I don't really care TJ, I've read a number of his posts not aimed at me and formed my opinions!

Are you sure? Have you taken the outer off a SRAM triple? You could go to a 36 with no ill effects.

Hi njee20 - no it is a 2x10 crankset - Would I be looking for a 36T outer or middle for this in 104BCD ?

Didn't know they did a double that small, how daft. Well you could stick a 36 on there no problem like I say.
