Hi all

I have a 2015 GT Grade Aluminium 105. Last year I upgraded the stock wheels to a set of Pro Build Chosen from Merlin Cycles. However after two rear hubs failing I got a refund and put the stock wheel back on.

3 spokes broke yesterday on a ride and I don't think the wheel is worth repairing.

I can't seem to find many budget options for a rear wheel, it seems like there's not much choice in between a Pro Build Chosen at around £100 and then a big jump up to £240 for a Hope Open Pro RS4?

Am I missing anything? My budget for a new rear wheel is £200 max really. I use the bike for commuting, occasional canal paths and winter road riding.

Any help appreciated 👍

I forgot to say, the current wheel has a 6 bolt disc fitting

Hunt are the go to wheels, unsure if they sell individual wheels though, although a pair doesn't come that much over your budget.

Yes, the early Grades had badly built wheels. I had mine rebuilt under warranty after several broken spokes and they're fine now (cost about £40). I've also got a pair of Hunt 4 Seasons on another bike which were £300 and again have been fine. I guess there's not much of a market for selling the stock front wheel and getting a new pair instead of just the rear?

Hunt is £300 for a pair of Mason x Hunt 4 season wheels. I’ve got hem on my Cannondale and they’ve been great - and they are usefully lighter than the standard wheels were. Maybe contact them and see if they’ll sell you just a back one?

Other option is to speak to a local wheelbuilder and get them to build you one to your budget. If you picked up a novatec hub / decent mid range alloy rim and double butted spokes it should be in budget.

Thinking about it - if you want budget you get just look at some Mavic Alsoums - I got a pair from a-cycles in France (whipped tonyk) for about £150 a few years back. Not particularly light but I had them 3 years with no attention needed at all and were still going strong when I sold the bike with them on.

Thanks all. Have dropped Hunt an email regarding selling single wheels, and contacted a local wheel builder to see what he can come up with for my budget
