I need a fat tyre on the back on my hardtail as I am fat and have a history of pinch flats...

I don't have the same issue up front as the forks take the hit rather than the rim and tyre so was thinking of a narrower tyre on the front compared to the back.

I have 2.35 Kenda's at the moment but they are more like 2.5 compared to other tyres and some Conti verticals 2.3 but apparently they are more like 2.1's.

Would it look like a tractor or 1970's chopper with 2.1 (ish)on the front and 2.5 (ish)on the back?

tubeless, at least the rear wheel - a full UST rim is strong also...

I run skinny on the back and fat on the front, makes far more sense. Reduced rolling resistance at the back and bigger tyre at the front to improve front end grip.

+1 for tubeless tho, no more pinchflats!!

I have verts front and rear, I have about 1 pinch flat a year on my HT. Bigger tyre at the front helps when hitting rocks, as it doesn't get knocked off line like a thinner tyre can.

You could try a thicker tube in the rear tyre.
I went to Lee Quarry prior to the Weekender with some mates. Out of the six of us, five pinch flatted on the rocky descent used for the DH race.
The three of us that raced put a DH tube in our rear tyres for the race and had no pinch flats. Quick, cheap, easy fix, adds a couple of hundred grams though.
