[#1305987]

I've been having some medial left knee pain recently, which i can only seem to attribute to the width of my cranks.

When i look down i can see that my left leg is pointing outwards quite alot.

I'm currently using some XT octalink cranks, with XTR pedals (with cleats which are adjusted all the way in).

I was wondering if anybody knew of a narrower set of cranks as there is masses of room between the chainstay and the left crank as it is. I've had a bit of a look around online and can't seem to find any answers, only alot of people complaining about the width of cranks!

Even just a bit narrower on the left would do, as my right leg seems fine (i think my hips must be a funny shape)

You could maybe try a narrower BB or possibly spacing it out a touch on the drive side.

before you try different cranks go back to flat pedals and see if that improves matters.
I've got some knee niggles im tying to cure but from memory i had over 10 years on flat pedals pain free, its only the last few years on spd's that i've had issues.

I'm not being funny - are you sure the q-factor is the cause?

Not completely sure, but i cant think what else it might be. I've been having a play around with everything shoe/pedal wise and can't seem to get rid of this problem.

I'm thinking trying a narrower set of cranks is the next step in getting rid of this problem...

Go and see a physiotherapist. I spent ages ignoring knee pain during/after riding and thought it would go away.

It turned out that it was muscle imbalances causing the problem, e.g. tight hamstrings and quads and glutes which needed strengthening.

Some physio exercises may well solve the problem without needing to buy a new chainset.....

What Eldrik said but make sure your physio is a cyclist or at least cycling sympathetic.

Then go and see a bike fitter to make sure your set up is correct and stop the problem from coming back.

You can get short axle Egg Beaters, be an alternative.

HT2 cranks do have wide Q-factors, older designs were better, particularly when you could fit shorter BBs.
