I'm looking at building up a flat bar road bike for commuting duties.
Will an MTB Rear mech and shifter work ok with a road cassette? I’m looking at using XT mech, shifters and disc brakes running 1x11 with an 11/28 road cassette at the back.
The cog spacing is the same, so it should shift correctly; the one problem you may have is the 11 speed road cassette needs a slightly wider freehub.
Top jockey will be a bit far from the 28 sprocket, shifting might not be ideal. But spacing will be spot on.
Maybe look at the ultegra 11/34, that fits on a normal hub, as it doesn't require the deeper 11 speed spline. Will also minimise distance between top jockey wheel and the cassette.
Should be OK. An XTR M972 mech was fine with a 12-27 Dura-Ace cassette if that helps. Not tried 11 speed mind.
I’ve been swapping and changing a few bits round from road bike to sons hack bike. I’ve tried road mech ( short cage) and 9 speed 34 tooth and that’s good with a 30tooth nw front and medium cage rear mech and mtb cassette on road bike and that’s better shifting than original 105 mech!!. All ten speed but I would have thought it should all be fine. I found that shortening chain a bit helped as it added a bit of tension but that’s on non clutch mech.
