Why rent? If you want to live in a nicer or bigger house than you could get a mortgage for, if you expect to move frequently and don't want to keep paying stamp duty or faffing with mortgages. That sort of thing.
I don't get the argument that rent is wasted money, it's just paying for a product much like any other, a perfectly valid choice.
