There's a part of me that just can't get over the need to keep my lovely refurbed 1999 Kona, despite it adding to a v long running lower back niggle.
It came with 80mm Bombers and I've run 100mm ones for yonks (thus changing the angles slightly) and I'm convinced therin lies my back-pain problem.
I've been through numerous set ups, beginning with On-one style v short stem n saddle back all the way positioning to now (long for me) 90mm stem and saddle central on the rails, but despite my endless fettling with bar height, stem length and seat angle I still get this perennial ache.
I can't seem to balance speed/performance with comfort.
Any advice? I've even been to a chyropractor and had little success.
i would say sort your pedalling position first, then work on the rest.
when i got my cx bike a couple of months ago i experienced back pain, lower back, similar to you, when riding it, i ended up bringing the saddle forward by about 5mm, and lowering it by about 5mm, both of which reduced the stress on my back and that was me sorted, luckily.
try moving one thing at a time if you are adjusting things.
alternatively, you could try a professional bike fit at a reputable shop, then compare what they suggest as ideal to your bike.
bottom line, if you cant get comfy on it its not much use as a bike to you.
