Any LEJOG'ers recommend accommodation at John O'Groats? Just needing the one night, as despite finding details on the SYHA website the YHA doesn't exist!

There's a pub there thats quite popular. They have attached accomodation across the road, which was new and clean. We stayed there last year for 1 night.

the YHA did exist 2 years ago- granted it may not anymore. I remember it being west of John O'Groats by a couple of miles though

there're are plenty of options there.. well, plenty for a place where there's not much going on. I camped there, this time last year.. just me in a tiny tent and two small caravans in the whole campsite!

When I was up there in September, they were in the process of finishing off a load of pods - those sort of semi-permanent teepee style things. Just above the shore, they looked really nice. A quick Google has failed to turn up any info though, anyone know more?

Other than that, camping and the pub, about your only option is to arrange for a car to meet you there and take you to Wick or Thurso, both of which have a selection of B&Bs.

I'd head back to Wick. You can then get the train to Inverness the next day and onto the main lines south.

Alternatively, what we did was book onto the return portion of a minibus tour from JOG to Inverness - they had space for two bikes. We then got the sleeper back to Euston. http://www.puffinexpress.co.uk/

Seaview hotel ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope it's changed since i was last there few years back.
Couldn't get in the "hotel" but got a room in their recent addition of the old pub across the road.......

Yeah.....
Hopefully it's been gutted and refurbed, the floor boards nailed to the floor, unlike the ones in our room which moved the bed everytime someone went down the corridor to the toilet (no ensuite)
Hopefully they have put the missing step back in the wooden staircase.

Went across the road for evening meal and breakfast, food was good, background music seemed to be something like a mystic/romantic/movie score/american disney land album of scottish muzak stuck on loop.

Did the old hotel that was fenced off down by the quay ever get demolished or fixed up ? that must have been nice once.

Made me think of the Falklands when i visted ๐Ÿ™‚

Nice to see something happen to it.

It looked so sad behind it's security fence.

BTW don't forget you're in Scotland. Wild camping is allowed, you don't have to use overpriced campsites.
