if you had cycle commuted to work, your whole working life (33yrs), never used a car, or any other transport, would that justy spending whatever price you wanted on your next bike?
or, how much would you justify spending.
Yes...
We're here but once Tony.
Do it.
My next bike? I'm after a new Full Suss, so how much? About £4k I think...
Do you want it?
Can you afford it?
If the answer is yes to both the above, that's all the justification you need.
I'd spend right up to exactly as much as I could spare - if I wanted to
Yep - absolutely not even a moments thought, never mind the cycled to work your whole life thing - it's your money Ton, spend it how you like and on what brings a smile to your face - stick two fingers up to the haters
If I had commuted to work by bike for 33 years, I'd buy a 5 series with heated seats.
Do you want it?
Can you afford it?
Any one from the two...
cost is not a problem. it wont be bling. it will be built for perfect fit and purpose.
roughly how much does it cost to run a car for a year?
Electric car or Lamborghini?
Wanting one is justification enough.
It was a joke fella.
This is the same bloke who had enough of chasing new stuff isn't it?
Want and need are not the same thing...I tend towards need as want means working.

no, not new stuff, but expensive bling fashionable shiney expensive stuff, that knobbers like you lust after..... 😀
In that case, may I present a 5 series with heated seats.
I have a focus with heated seats..In that case, may I present a 5 series with heated seats.
I think the average annual cost of running a car, including depreciation, is about £3k.
If I went to work by bus it would cost about £1k a year, bike costs leave me many quids in 😀
Coming from a personal standpoint and knowing what you've you've been through over the past few years (from your posts on here) i'd spec myself a custom fit and built bike that fits to an absolute T along with 100% fulfilling the actual needs of my riding (rather than fulfilling my imaginary riding wish list) with a selection of parts that are fit and forget - either through function or quality (or both).
It would probably invoke a visit to shand cycles though, thankfully that's just up the road for me. 😀
I'd want something that just screamed ride me you ****er at every opportunity, my soulcraft did that for me 10 years ago.
Even with an unlimited budget I'd carefully consider the cost effectiveness of each component. Partly upbringing, partly professional experience (I mean outwith the bike industry). Somafunk has a good point too. Too many bikes seem to be specced for activities and adventures the owner only dreams they will do.
this will be steel, mudguarded, funny bared, possibly hub geared. built to cruise slowly along at a steady pace, with a comfy seat, and a nice upright cockpit, to veiw the scenery from.
DO IT.
Now.
I would spend very little, my commuter gets battered day in day out. It is however my absolutely favourite bike, even over others costing way more.
Whatever I had the budget for. Same as any purchase, the whole offsetting I did this vs others do that stuff is irrelevant. It's up to you.

My main FS build was like this, I wanted the best I could get for the right price, everything was chosen for a reason. There was a big spreadsheet.

One mans bling is anothers bland....
I'd stick it all in a spreadsheet like mikews. The great thing about statistics is you can make them suggest exactly what I want 🙂

So, something like a Flying Pigeon
The classic Chinese commuter! Rod brakes, too! 🙂
The trouble with steel frames is no matter what quality they are, when exposed to months of winter salt, eventually little rusty runs begin to ooze from those little holes by your drop outs and then you start thinking...how bad is that rust...is it still strong...is it still safe... think I better get a new bike!
Your money your choice.
Just consider whether your current want matches your long-term wants (or needs) - or if you just want a new bike and might be looking to change again in six months when you've decided it's no longer what you need?
