[Closed] Joplin seatpost - repressurisng?

[#4053635]

I've followed the instructions to check the air pressure and oil level in my Joplin 4. I'm at the stage where the seatpost is stripped, upside down and I've pumped up to 70psi.

The instructions now say to activate the lever and the pressure should drop. This isnt happening! The pressure doesnt drop at all. But, if I assume everything is equalised, and put the post back together, it fails completely. It is completely spongy and drops as though the lever is being pressed.

Second question - any suggestions on making a home made valve core remover so I can add a little oil while I'm going this?

thanks

The non equalised bit could be that you were activating the lever when the post was upside down (the top part would be totally full of oil)?

Before you go much further - put it on the bike and cycle it completely up and down.

If the spongy business continues it could be low oil, failing internal valve or a problem with the cabling / lever.

Try this - on the bike - drop the post half way. If the valve and cabling are ok the post should be rock solid pressing down it it (you'll still be able to pull it up). If its just spongy for the first cm or two when fully extended: it's most likely oil.

As for a bodged core remover: tweezers? Or get yourself down to Halfords.

I think the post is mechanically sound, it was working fine, if a bit spongy and slow to return to full travel - this was supposed to be a quick pre holiday service.

the instructions say to pressurise with the seatpost upside down though...?

I'll try your idea, and I think I'll need to top up a little.

cheers

70psi is the joplin 3, 55psi for joplin 4

Really? I thought it was 70 to 75 psi and 55cl of 5 or 10wt oil?

OK, I'll try 55psi first.

BTW - eye brow tweezers make a good valve removal tool

@rse, had it working beautifully, better than new, over tightened the 10mm nut and sheared it right off = broken seatpost. ๐Ÿ™
