my trusty altura attack jacket has bit the dust, the taped seams have unraveled and the zip has broken and won't do up or undo fully (effectively a smock now!) so what shall i replace it with? another hardshell or is something like a soft shell equally as good?

Invested in the Gore Alp X last year after running an Endura MT500 into the ground. The Gore is the best jacket I've ever owned. Completely wind and water proof and warm but breathable too. Light enough to roll up into a pack as well. Only down side is that it will scuff and tear in a big fall but there are people out there who can repair Goretex.
If you hunt round you can still get last years model on the cheap. DON'T pay the full price, no jacket is worth that !
