I'll ask again....
40 - Why does a duck?
41. What time is love?
Where does your lap go when you stand up? Also, can you hold a lapdog if you are stood up?
So you are OK with riding an e-bike yourself, even though it marks you out as a lazy git and you'll get diabetes sooner. But do you worry about what it means for the sport as a whole in terms of accessibility, public perception and access rights etc. And strava. It's ruined strava.
You say you are getting rounder with age and yet you only weigh 11 stone, either your scales are broke or you are indeed Warwick Davis and i claim £5.

40. Yea love riding one... if it marks me as a lazy git in someones eyes that's their problem really. I try to not to judge people at face value myself.
The accessibility issue is a non-issue in my opinion. It's usually used by people who don't understand e-bikes. An e-bike goes no faster than a regular bike on downhill sections, they probably go slower on flats.... up... yea a little bit faster.
Strava - not really my responsibility. They didn't adapt quick enough. I always select e-bike when I'm riding but generally I have no interest in KOM's or leader-boards. They now have an ebike option. Suspected cheaters can be flagged by the community. I think they also auto-convert suspicious rides. My local trails have had KOM's for the past 4 years which are impossible on anything but a motorbike - there have always been cheats on Strava always will be.
Sounds like you're not a fan of them. If that's the case can I ask why you feel this way?
Why DID the chicken cross the road??
I was out the other week on my bike when I saw a big fat bloke on an ebike, grinning his happy face off. A hundred yards behind him were his gurning mates on normal bikes.
So, with that observation in mind, can I have a go please?
persistent ankle, knee injuries and asthma all contribute. E-bike has given me a bit more confidence that I can go out for all day rides again.
You answered my question before I asked it dammit!
Bike Scene in Guisborough tried to get me to test ride a leccy bike last week but I'm not ill or suffering a heart/lung/idle**** problem so I didn't bother. 😆
*YET*
pick one of your regular climbs on strava and give us the length, elevation difference, time on regular bike and ebike, and HR data if you have it.
edit: and give us a DH segment too!
Well I demo'd 2 e bikes at Tweedlove at the weekend. The Scott was cumbersome like you describe. The Cube was great - at times I almost forgot I was riding one - the geometry was very good - almost like my HT - could jump on this one and throw it about - not like the Scott.
Another thing - I got a total workout (Which surprised me) you don't need to try hard but you can if you want to. Think I'd have to pace myself as I got carried away 🙂 Great fun!

41. I'm not really a strava pro - I've just had a look and because E-bike segments are so new there aren't many of them so I can't give you a direct comparison. I can give you this for though:
A typical LLandegla trip for me = One lap of the red route. It's about 10.1 miles and I'm shagged. As in can't breathe, can barely drive home, can't walk for a few days after. Strava says = 10 miles Moving time 1hr22mins I hated every minute.
I went to Llandegla last week on the e-bike = I did the red once and the blue twice, plus some messing around on the skills section. Total millage 22.1 miles Moving time = 1hr43mins Loved every minute of it. I definitely felt like I had a tough workout, especially my core as I did twice as much DH.
I see it like this - I covered twice the distance = twice as much DH fun. It was win win for me.

42. If I had 4-5k knocking around would I have got the Scott? probably not. A good 2nd hand deal came up and I made an impulse purchase. The price was in the realms of a very good Enduro bike if not cheaper.
I've got a new tactic to ensure I maintain my fitness on the ebike (despite riding twice as far as usual)..... switch the motor off completely for one of the climbs at the end of the day. It's brutal. The weight combined with an element of engine breaking makes it a killer. What do you reckon?

43. There is no shame in giving it a go other than every man and his dog having an opinion on how you live your life. You'd be surprised how fun it is. Consider it like a track day for a car... you don't need a farrari to pop down to Asdas but sometimes it's just fun.

44. If you can catch up with him, which you probably will on a flat piece of trail you can ask him for a go. 😀
What do women really want?

Wer'e asking the questions, not you!

That's Ton, off here. He used to have a dicky ticker but he doesn't anymore. He doesn't have/need a leccy bike either. 🙂
I want to throw in an observation after reading some other forums about bikes... and some misconceptions.
45. Ebikes aren't that fast on the flats or even on some DH sections. Their is an element of engine breaking going on once you pass the limit of 15mph assistance. That combined with the excessive weight of the bikes means getting it past 16mph is really difficult. You need some big leg muscles.
15mph uphill is fast.
15mph on a flat is slow.
Pushing the bike faster than 30mph on DH section require fitness.
But... the acceleration on corners after braking is a great.
I hope that clears up some ideas of what an ebike can do. They are all about torque for climbs rather than top speeds. A half decent XC rider would pass me on flats and DH all day long.
What do women really want?
46. Men on E-bikes - they find it irresistible.
How can the universe be both bounded yet infinite?
How can the universe be both bounded yet infinite?
47. It has an expanding boundary. The visible light red-shift theory supports this. It will eventually start to contract but that's a way off yet at which point we might all be at peace with ebikes.
All these questions and still no pic of said e-bike.
Let's have a pic?
Ebikes aren't any faster than normal bikes yet you covered twice the distance in the same riding time? Is that all through not needing to rest as much??
How many fibres are intertwined in a shredded wheat biscuit?
How many times did the Batmobile catch a flat?
is there storage for your tampons on the bike?

No it will kill your Strava times.... which are much more important than going out and having fun or just riding ....:D

47. yep got it in one. You don't need the breaks after the climbs and your legs will stay fresher longer allowing you to cover more distance. However I did say ebikes are faster climbing.. much much much faster. Flats and DH not so much. 😀
Fair play to you answering these questions, some of which are bordering on sexist never mind flat out offensive.
I'm the lightest I've been in years and doing more miles than i ever have. I'm even doing quite well in road races (until glandular fever hit me). I wouldn't mind a go on one, they look bloody good fun.

48. Hahaha yea. I got a bit to Strava a few years back and just decided to stop using it. I switch it on for big rides as I like to see how far I've gone. Strava has an E-bike option now (it also forces you onto it if you go to fast). I think they were a bit to slow to implement it and it's messed up the already messed up leaderboards a bit more.

I'm pretty sure the ebike will tell you that 😀 and you won't kill yourself trying to beat a time set on a motorbike to boot.
Also there is this "new invention" I've seen for non e-bikes... where you stick a magnet on a wheel and it has this novel cable idea that goes to a display and even tells you speed and time.
I realise this might be all a bit modern for some... and who'd have thought they would be invented when Strava already exists...
You can even get these wireless and even straight to your phone and add cadence in as well...

49. Find a demo day and give a few a blast. However I guarantee on the next long and slow climb you'll mutter to yourself "wish i had an ebike".

Engine breaking? Don't they have freewheels?
they do have freewheels - but it does feel like engine braking once you go off boost - a combination of a bit more drivetrin drag and the weight of the bike

Worth every penny then. 😀
Most enjoyable Ebike thread ever! Well done!

Hello, who said that? can't be arsed to scroll back! What rubbish! Really.
Maybe if specific Ebikes had been mentioned, but it certainly doesn't go with my experience of a Scott, a Cannondale or a Cube.

50. It's a weird drag effect when you try to pedal faster than the assist. Especially on DH bits, it's a combination of all all you've mentioned. it's like when you slip your car into a lower gear by mistake and engine braking kicks in.
Q: Have you considered fitting a dongle to remove the 15mph restriction?

51. I said that, it was me. 15mph limitation on my Scott bike.
Flat = I will accelerate away from a normal rider up to the point of 15mph. Past this point it's an effort to get more speed out the bike. A fitter rider on a lighter bike would pass me and reach a decent speed of say 25mph much faster than I ever could on a bike.
DH = I will accelerate into the DH section faster than a normal rider. Hitting an average DH speed of of 30mph quite quickly. Any attempt to pedal faster than this and im contending with engine drag and bike weight. It's a weird sensation like hitting a brick wall in speed. My normal bike is a lot faster on DH.
Just my experiences and feelings on it. E-bikes aren't the complete "cheat" package everyone makes them out to be. Up-hills are win all the way though. 😀

52. I did consider it as it's amazing how quickly you get used to the up hill speed - it starts to feel slow quite quickly. However I think 15mph is more than enough for getting up hill. Turbo mode on my Bosh is to fast in some cases. Dongles are quite expensive as well (£150). I think past 15mph it starts to get a bit motor-bikey.

That's weird. The bikes I mentioned, particularly the Cannondale, just felt like a normal bike once you started going down, pretty tight singletrack we were on. Heavier, of course, but no drag for sure.
Haibike wasn't mentioned, cos we didn't like them at all.
You can't lump eBikes all in together, performance wise, obviously.
