Chris King headset was feeling pretty sticky and tight this weekend. Well, I thought, it's gotta be 6 years on the bike at least, I won't be too upset if I need a new one. But first I'll service it for the first time ever. Popped the seals off, all sorts of grindy crunchy stuff in there. Bit of degreaser and compressed air and blimey stroik a loit, if it werent spinning freely and easily. New grease, seals on, smooth as new.
I used to get through 2 headsets a year. This is the oldest component on the bike.
Trigger's broom springs to mind.
2 a year? were you jetwashing it then?
hey up,
the bearings are top class i agree - BUT i bet your steerer tube has a nice mark on it from the top bearing race munching into it ! all my king headsets did that....

No jetwashing, even got through those purging grease ones. I put it down to peaks and lakes grinding paste and crap sealing systems. LBS fitted too.
And yes, steerer tube has fretting tracks. Don't seem to be a problem, but would probably annoy me if fork was a hyper expensive one.
