Just got my 20 year old road bike back in condition after many years gathering dust at the back of the garage with a rebuild of the wheels, new rubber and a new drive train (switching from a Biopace 52/42 + 13-21 setup to a much more fat-friendly 52/39 + 13-23 setup). Just been for a spin around the lanes and was thrilled and amazed! I'd forgotten just how fast, smooth and easy road riding is - crystal ball shows plenty of afternoon winter road epics in my future!

No, oval chainrings are back in - biopace was all wrong and still is - 90 degrees out of where it should be.

I can understand the pro's and cons of both Biopace and "traditional" oval rings, it's just that their respective logics are at polar ends of the spectrum it's hard to know which is "right", which also gives me some belief that neither are any more right than a round ring!

I thought this when I got an old road-bike. Cant imagine I'd ever get rid now. Sometimes just riding a bike is all that's needed to lift the spirits. And kitting up/cleaning down for off-road rides mid-winter can sometimes just seem too much of a chore, so out comes the old faithful. Love it to bits.

bio-pace was a balls-up.

it made it harder to pedal at the same point in the crank circle where you had less effective strength.

but yes, road bikes are ace!

I must be doing something wrong. At least having roads like an afgan bowling green round here isn't my fault, I suspect the lack of speed might be my fault.

Yep. Reynolds 531C to be precise, nice and whippy when out of the saddle.

No Paul, it's only the forks and bar tape that are Lilac! Frame is a slightly rusty silver!

You tough boys!

My road bike has a 48/34 with a 13-14-15-16-17-20-23-26-30 cassette.

My 31-inch bottom gear is much loved by my legs! ๐Ÿ˜›
