I seem to have a habit of picking up 'bargain' cracked/repaired frames, so far I've had:
Socom - cracked at the seattube, ended up selling it on and breaking even (thankfully!) after deciding I was never going to really use it for it's intended DH use! Frame went on to be repaired very succesfully and now lives in Scotland where as far as I know it is being ridden rather hard in some DH series by a very competent rider.
IF Ti Delux: bought off TheSwede on this forum, he'd had it repaired by a mate/friend of a friend. Absolutely mint otherwise, and the repair has held up fine over time, and I expect it to continue to do so... makes a lovely SS rigid hardtail, that's for sure! 8)
Cervelo R3: bought off eBay (after it was advertised on here), had a RH seatstay professionally repaired, was in otherwise excellent condition. Again, have decided it's just a bit too much for my roadie needs, so have onsold it for a slight profit (bonus!) 8)
And my latest addition? Another Ti Delux! Just bought of Wu-tangled on the Retro forum... interestingly enough, it's cracked in exactly the same spot(s) as TheSwede's, and there are a few folk on Retro saying they know of 2-3 other frames that have done the same... pretty poor if you've paid £2500+ for a frame!!! 🙄

I really do like damaged/cracked frames (within reason), I have no qualms about getting them repaired or riding them. It lets me get a boutique frame for a bargain price, things I could otherwise never afford! 8)
Anyone else tempted by the lure of the (potential) bargain aspect of taking a punt on someone elses writeoff? 😯

i thought andy howson bought it ..... 😉
I wouldn't ride a cracked and repaired frame. Seems a little too much like tempting fate.
May I be so bold as to suggest that you probably ride infrequently and in a manner more suited to the fairer sex 🙂
Nowt wrong with riding like a girl 😉 . This gets ridden every day . . . not pretty but I love it to bits 😀

Cracks on both sides of the shock mount gusset and hairlines in the linkage plate, plus rewelded rear end. Nothing has fallen off it yet since its rescue a month ago and none of the cracks have worsened.
My bro just paid about £110 to have his carbon road frame repaired professionally, and they have done an amazing job (Fibre-lyte). They also did a set of road bars for him.
No problem as long as it is done properly. As soon as the Boeing 787 starts operating they'll be performing structural carbon repairs on that every time someone drives a truck into it !

Probably a fair call tbh, I am more of an XC pootler (or MTB rambler as I like to think of it, just riding around enjoying the countryside and the views) 😆 . I probably wouldn't go for a damaged/repaired frame that was going to be used for really hard riding, as you say, it's perhaps tempting fate a bit in a situation where if things go bad they can go really bad!

See, that's the thing, you can get repairs done for not too much dinero... take this IF for example, £250 to buy it, a quote of £75 from Enigma to repair it... so £325 all in, for a £2k+ frame... 'tis a no brainer for me! It'll see light use in my hands, and will give me great joy to own, and if I ever decide to sell it, I daresay I'll make a small profit on it... sure there's no warranty and no guarantee it won't go tits up on me, but I really do think it's a small risk to take...
Oooooh yes' broken frames, got a broken intense spyder frame that * warms me cockles* every time I look at it

Is he Kenneththecurtain (I think he is)... may have been exaggerating for effect, I don't really know much about the chap (other than he's opp north and does race, I think?) 🙂
My bike's never clean enough to spot a crack that small.

Just bought of Wu-tangled on the Retro forum...
Correction, bought off TheFallGuy on Retrobike... previously owned by Dr S as well (not that I know these chaps, but ya'll might! 🙂 )
That's almost an identical failure as my old one. It's the seat post insert so I'm told. They use a different material now instead of plastic so I doesn't wear. Have a word with Tim psychie.
Looking at a Rourke road frame with a split in the chainstay. It's underneath near the bottom bracket shell, looks like it's been kerbed.
No problem with repairs to metal (aren't welds supposed to be stronger anyway?) but it would worry me as to how much the frame has been hammered or where else is likely to crack/fail as a result.

On the retrobike thread, this makes 4 frames that they know of cracking in the same place, given that IF surely isn't making that many of these, it's a pretty poor 'failure' rate! Sounds like they're looking after folk who have one, which is good, but man you'd still be annoyed having paid full whack for one! 😡 😯
