So at the end of the month I am going to treat myself to a pair of 29er Hunt MTB wheels for my Stumpjumper 6fattie. Now this bike gets used mainly for trail riding but also quite a few single day Enduro Races (think Southern Enduro).
So I do go the lighter Trail version or the more robust Enduro version? I am about 95lkg kitted up and do like to clatter about on the bike. Thoughts?
Do you want the extra width (30mm v 33.4mm internal) and how often do you damage wheels?ย I'd go for the Trail Wide rather than the extra heft of the Enduro Wide but my biggest tyre is a 2.5 (I'm not counting the supposed 2.6 more like 2.4 at best Specialized I have) and rarely break anything.ย Even if you are a bit of a rim dinger I'd consider the lighter rim plus an insert in the rear
That it, the Roval wheels that came on the Stumpy have been fine with no rim damage that I am aware of. Based on that at the mo the Trail Wide are looking the better option.
I have the XC wides and they seem tough enough for most things to be honest. I'm not jumping or doing huge drop offs, but I'm far from careful with my lines (Solaris Longshot, 130mm Fox 34s), and they bring even 2.3 tyres up as big fat looking things (running side by side comparison with 2.8 WTB on 40mm rims, they don't look far short).
I'd go with Trail for sure.
