I have on my bike packing bike at the minute 11/42 with a  30T up front its on its last legs so considering 11/46 with a 32T now thinking 32  for a bit move varvar vroom on the flat how does the top gear compare when climbing easier on the 30 or 32  not a gear ratio wizard so any useful insight would be good

Compare both setups side to side, all will become clear.

Also consider an oval ring - I reckon worth half a chainring size at either end in terms of effort.

http://ritzelrechner.de/?GR=DERS&KB=30&RZ=11,13,15,17,19,21,24,28,32,36,42&UF=2240&TF=90&SL=2.6&UN=KMH&GR2=DERS&KB2=32&RZ2=11,13,15,18,21,24,28,32,36,40,46&UF2=2240

There you go - a bit easier in the big sprocket and obviously a bit faster at the other end.

30/42 0.714

32/46 0.696 so easier gear

Have a look at a Sunrace 46t cassette, less of a final jump between gears than Shimano.

Pondered the Sunrace option Scuff but heard of problems when back peddling and low on stock in the normal outlets!

What wheel size?

Ratios are sort of meaningless in isolation...

If it's the same bike and just a swap it doesn't matter

Have you got clearance for the bigger ring. On my longitude I have to space the ring over so far to get a decent chain line that a 34 or 34 oval won't fit!
