Make sure you wet the strap first?

I always put mine under the tap for a couple of seconds..

Then put it on..

also helps if you put it under your jersey, not over the top of it.

Is the strap clean? If you keep reusing it without washing it for a period then the strap does not work as well (don't put it in the tumble dryer). Alternatively, if the strap is old then you may need a replacement.
It would be nice if I could recommend that you cantact Polar UK but they are one of worst companies I have ever had to deal with for customer service.

as said. Make sure the sensor is on wet skin. And its not too far away from reciever.

Thy don't work upside down and they need a salt solution (not plain water) to conduct.

Make sure the contacts on the strap and the bit you put the battery in are clean. They oxidise and it breaks the circuit.

Plain water from the tap conducts fine.
