How many bikes is too many bikes?
I have a 100mm xc Ht and a 5inch Fs. Both of which I use for different type rides. But I have decided to get a longer travel Ht in the Mmmbop guise.
Thus moving the 100mm Ht to an almost redundant position. My dilemma is, shall I sell of the old Ht to make room and make a big loss in the process - or keep it as an emergency, with the knowledge that its hardly ever going to get ridden again because 2 bikes seem all the bikes I’ll ever require.
So, how many bikes do you - even if you’re a bit of a hoarder - really ever likely to use?
Standard reply number of bikes you 'should own = n+1 where n equals the number you currently own.
I have 7. I feel comfortable with 7. However 8 would be too many. 🙂
I find it much easier to keep spare parts as assembled bikes than have have lots of boxes and drawers full of bike bits. Trouble is the more bikes I have the more spare parts I require, so the n+1 answer above applies.
There can never be too many... I'm just limited on space to keep 'em.
I have far too many.
In an ideal world I'd have:
- a mountainbike,
- a fast road bike with adequate tyre clearance and guard-mounts to be properly all-weather
- the Big Dummy
3 is probably too many really, but the Dummy is a car substitute.
Inefficiency means that I have a swish road bike, a winter roadbike, a ss commuter and a Brompton as well as a mountainbike and the Big Dummy. Ah well. 🙂
yer silly bugger
is it not abit like saying to a woman you have too many shoes ( for one pair of feet)
i try to get down to 3 all the time
work
full sus
and h/tail
but it does not happen.........
work
full sus
29r ss
blue pig
mmmb..............shhhh
I have 6 - too many, but I can sort of justify having them all
EDIT: Expect a SS bike advert in the classifieds soon now I come to think about it 😆
Over 100 at the moment and that's a few too many - wanna buy one?
I've got all bases covered:
1 x Full Suss MTB
1 x Road Bike (daily commuter)
1 x Hybrid (ex daily commuter - doesn't get used)
1 x Hardtail MTB (which is officially belongs to the wife but she doesn't use it)
stoopid question... now you see people using words like justify and space and ... grrrrrrr... dumb question ;o)
Cheers fellas.
as confused as before.lol
n + 1
but I think you actually need - that is the ones I ride at least once a week
Hardtail
Full suspension
Road bike
The singlespeed and a Hack bike are optional depending on tastes!
I have both though.
just picked my 6th tue,gonna cut down 2 4 by spring 2010
FS (being built up)
HT
BMX
CX x2
Road
Track
All get regular use.
I'd love a few more though 🙂
I've got 4 (F/S, hardtail, commuter/tourer, winter MTB/commuter) and enough in parts, including a frame, for one more.
My wife doesn't appear to complain when I have 4 built up bikes, but she does when I have 5 - so for me probably 5 is too many.
4 in my house and 2 at my Dads....
I hate cleaning bikes...
after many years of building up and trying different bikes/ideas, the perfect quiver for me...
intense 5,5 (summer and playing)
yeti arc (winter and distance)
spesh s works tricross (got to love cross bikes)
but i'll admit that i also have 2 overkill bikes...
yeti dj (for riding with my lad at the track)
scott cr1 sl (lovely lovely roadie fun)
my 6 yr old has...
se racing 16" bmx
haro micro race bmx
isla bein 20
A long travel HT is going to be for similar use as the FS, no? I'd keep the current HT as you might want to use it for short blatts. Or SS/Alfine it for winter use?
I have 4 bikes, FS, HT, Roadie and Commuter/Turbo bike. This week I'll proably use them all 🙂
> 1
You can only ride 1 bike at any given time, seems an utter waste to have another one sitting in the garage doing nothing.
i've got...
road bike
MTB
commuter/pub bike
I think i need to combine the road bike and commuter but that would risk it getting nicked when its outside the pub unless it looks a bit rubbish.
issue for me is space to put them all. Storage space costs far more than the bikes!
Infinity. Though I have a feeling I'm being a bit stingy with that suggestion.
Stumpjumper HT for xc racing
Trek Fuel EX FS trail bike
Trek Madone Road bike for sportives/training
456 with 160mm fork for fun 🙂
Well seeing as we're listing them:
Me:
Cotic BFe - Trail centres, anything with jumps/drops
Spesh Epic - Longer rides/anything with rocks
Dolan Fixie/SS - Commuting/around town
Lightspeed Roadie
Mrs Daz:
Revolution Hybrid
4yr old daughter
Spesh hotrock (about to be passed on to 2yr old)
Isla Beinn 20
On the 'would like to have, but don't have the space and the wife would kill me' list:
Singlespeed HT for the winter
29er
BMX
How many is too many?
2 more than you had yesterday.
Surely if the ideal number is n+1 and no one disputes that, then the answer to this question must be n+2
I dont have enough bikes nor enough room for any more.
1 x road bike (on the turbo trainer)
1 x road bike for the commute to work
1 x 100mm hardtail
1 x Riged SS
1 x Fullsuss light weight MTB bike (used for racing)
1 x Unicycle (neverused needed getting rid off)
Bikes wanted
1 x long travel MTB (maybe 140mm or even 160mm)
1 x Cyclocross bike
that way have a basses covered, need a bigger house to put them in before i get any more, my bike room is prity full.
Just two, a road bike and a mountain bike. Would theoretically be nice to have a more sensible xc bike as the Pitch is normally in silly DH type mode but I don't really have the space/cash.
I'm up to nine but I'm convinced that's too many:
Full susser
Ti Hardtail
Racing CX bike
Back-up Racing CX bike
SS CX bike
Bling road bike
Winter road bike
Time-trial bike
SS commuter (nasty)
Also currently building up a SS...
I'd like a cx/touring bike to complete the set. Can't think of any other niches I need to fill, so to speak.
At present I have:
7" full sus DH/Trail bike
2.5" full sus XC race bike
HT with 4" forks for everyday riding
5" full sus trail bike for lumpy rocky stuff with uphill as well as down.
Carbon road bike for road training/time trials
Ancient HT with virtually rigid forks for titting aboot and possible single speed conversion.
I have no desire for a BMX or fixie or anything silly like that. What else do I not have that I should have?
Big stupid Alps / up lift days bike
UK Trail Centre bike
Short travel FS XC bike
HT
SS
SS - 'jump mode' (Pink Wizard)
Road bike on turbo
I almost just bought a BMX - cos it was sooooo cheap (had to think 'when would I use it' - never - so walked away)
But in answer to the question IMO - too many is when you don't use them
Currently
130mm HT (853 Inbred)
Cross bike (Jake)
I keep fancying a road bike but more coz I just like the look of them so maybe 3 would be too many for me as the 2 I have a pretty versatile.
Nah **** it I want an SS cx bike and a road bike too
Ive got 5.
5" FS (Yeti 575 08)
29er Single Speed (Niner One 9 08)
120mm HT (Cotic Soul 06)
Winter Commuter (Cotic Road Rat 07)
Summer Commuter (Specialied Tricross Comp 09)
I start feeling pangs of guilt with any more.
For me the answer is usually one less than I have at any given time.
10 bikes is definitely too many (that's because I have 9 and the Mrs says no more.
Trek Fuel Ex FS
Alfine Inbred for winter
2007 Orange Clockwork
Orange O2 - first bike can't bare to get rid of it.
Ridley carbon winter bike
track bike
Mudguards winter bike
653 cafe bike
853 bike at in-laws
plus the Mrs has an Orange 5 and a Trek WSD.
In my mind I can justify them all and that's all i need.
I reckon that you only have too many when you have 2 bikes of the same type used for the same purpose...
1 x 6in Full Susser
1 x Road bike
2 x Rigid SS - but one is a bodge and used for getting to the shop/gym and the other is used for mtbing so this doesn't count as duplication...
On the to-buy list:
1 x LT HT (fairly imminent)
1 x Marathon FS (when I've completed 5 events - currently on 0 😉 )
1 x Jump bike (impulse buy when the new local indoor skate/bike park thing opens in a few weeks...)
On the "no, that's a stupid idea" list:
1 x cheap roadbike for a turbo-trainer
FS - Mojo
HT - IF
29er - Salsa
SSR - Airborne (also commuter)
Simples.
If I could choose between the 2 HTs, I would!
n+1 is the right number
n+2 is too many
I've currently got:
1x XC Hardtail
1x TT bike
Availible for use:
1x FS XC
1x Road
I need:
1x Track
1x CX
1x DH
1x Carbon Road
1x Race XC
I think I've got most bases coverd in my world:
- Nicolai Heilus CC
- Cove Handjob in 115mm travel guise
- Boardman Hybrid commuter
- Retro Raleigh single speed drop bar thingy
I think 4 or 5 should be enough. I have a super duper road bike, winter road bike, mountain bike (hard tail 29er in my case) and a RoadRat for hacking, bit of off road mucking about. If I lived somewhere else I may justify a full susser and that should be enough. Oh, and maybe a single speed road bike and a single speed mountainbike.
Is that enough?
1 * FS
1 * HT
1 * SS
1 * CX
1 * RB (rat bike as a spare for lending out)
Would like to add a tandem, and maybe a 29er
Got, FS, Hardtail, Cheap Road bike and a commuter. Need a singlespeed mtb, and a summer road bike, maybe a cyclocross, fancy a unicycle and a tandem too.
Hmmmm.....
Mine:
- S-Works Stumpy full-sus
- Sunn Crosss single-speed
- One-One Pompino fixed
- Hoffman dirty 130 BMX
Nominally mine:
- BMX that I bought down the dump and did up for a laugh - turned out to be a bit small, so need to sell it
- Orange Clockwork that I bought on Ebay (1999 model, near mint condition, mix of XT+LX, manitou forks, 14" frame - for £120!) This was bought for an ex-girlfriend, but we split up before she paid me for it. Might sell it at some point.
- Old 1994/95 Marin Eldridge Grade - £15 down the dump 🙂 Again, I need to clean this up and sell it on.
Mine but stored in my dad's shed 120 miles away:
- Beautiful early 90's steel lugged Massi racer, with full period Campag Record groupset.
- Early 90's Saracen that I had running as a SS back when I was a student in 1994-97 (proper old skool!)
- A Raleigh Grifter (bought for £10 - needs a lot o TLC)
- 1988 Muddy Fox Courier - massive 21" frame! My first MTB - well it wasn't really mine, my dad bought it, by I adopted it pretty quickly 8) Classic bike now!
So 11 by my reckoning!
