Help!

I recently bought a second-hand GF Rig. It didn't come with any manuals, etc and I can't figure out how to adjust the eccentric BB to take up the slack in the chain...

I've searched online but all it mentions is needing 2 x 5mm allen keys. I've tried all the combinations of loosening things but without success.

Any help appreciated!

Cheers

Forgot to add, I've looked at the online manual but it doesn't mention it, from what I can see...

I figured there's enough Rig owners on here that someone can help!

you bought a second hand eccentric Girl Friend?

aren't they very high maintenance and often passed off as fine but then often closer inspection usually reveals that they are irrecoverably damaged inside?

Secondhand but unused offroad - not a single trace of dirt or wear on it, so I'm happy with the condition thank you...

Is there a pinch bolt / clamp / grub screw underneath the bb? loosen the appropriate bolts and turn the eccentric

Or is it a taper wedge type? loosen the allen key visible at the side a couple of turns ant hit it with a hammer to loosen the wedge.

those are the only two types of eccentric bb I have seen but there might be others

Post a pic and we might be able to help

TJ, it's an expanding wedge type (not with bolts underneath like my current Dialled Love/Hate). There's an allen bolt on the non-drive side face - I've tried loosening it, whacking it with a hammer, but nothings budged so far. I don't want to whack it harder incase I damage it!

Undo the 5mm allen bolt. It'll go slack but keep undoing it and it'll go tight again.
When it goes tight again it'll start pushing the wedge out and you'll be able to turn the unit in the frame and adjust the chain.

Surely the OP didn't miss the joke on this one??

singlespeedstu - thanks :). I'll give it a try later. I had it going tight again and thought it was something wrong!

And doh, I totally missed the Girl Friend bit, the words didn't even register with me ๐Ÿ˜ณ

If its the expanding wedge type they are very easy do overtighten. the one on our tandem I do up only just more than finger tight and it always sticks - the self extracting does not work on ours - I undo it a couple of turns and use a punch in the centre of the bolt then whack it with a hammer - you are attempting to shock it - think ring like a bell rather than move it - so a sharp hit with a big hammer. The tapers can wedge really tight. If you can wind it up against the self extractor do so - but don't really heave on it - get it tight then shock it as above
