I suffer from hot foot when on the bike for more that a couple of hours.
I have high arched feet and although not particularly wide my toes do splay out.
I have Lake wide fit shoes which have plenty of room in the toe box and Specialized BG Insoles which help but have not resolved the issue. I have also moved my cleats back.
Have any of you had custom insoles and have these helped? Any other suggestions?
What pedals are you using?
I have different pedals on different bikes and different shoes and sometimes when I swop about I feel the small platform of the xtr on my sole.
My winter bike has some chunky shimano pedals with a support platform. They are heavier but they seem to provide a lot more support than my xtrs.
Maybe experiment with different pedals.
Does it happen on flat pedals?
I use M530 pedals mainly which do have a platform.
I have never cycled a long distance using flat pedals so cannot say.
I swapped from my Time ATAC XS Carbon pedals to Time Xpro 10s last summer on my road bike and I can't recall suffering hot foot since, used to be a regular thing on longer rides.
On road or off?
For road work, proper road shoes helped me with hot-spots, the bigger platform on the cleat really helped me.
I put some of these in my shoes (Spesh shoes, used with Time ATAC pedals on road and MTB):
Really helped, especially on the roadbike, with hot foot on long rides and a little toe that was previously being crushed. However, my problem is uber-flat feet (I basically have no arch).
I do keep wondering about getting proper roady shoes for on the road though.
Thanks for the replies.
Most of my riding is 'gravel' so moving to road pedals will not work.
I have a pair of the 'yoursole' footbeds but the Specialised BG footbeds seem to work better for me.
Hot foot tips that worked for me passed on from ultra endurance folks and then tried and tested on 12-24hr rides;
- Move cleats back as far as they go towards centre of foot
- Get some solestar Kontrol footbeds (this is a winner), can take a while to get used to
- Move cleats to outside of foot as much as possible if you suffer from nerve pressure on outside of foot
- in ride (on a descent) undo buckles/dials and shake foot out of pedal (always good relief)
- choose the right socks that don't overheat your foot
= shoes with airflow always helps
Hope that helps
Thanks fivealive.
I will try the cleat repositioning. I have just booked a bike fit for the 21st June and hopefully that will help.
