Hi all,
Quick question- what makes some hope free hubs louder than others ?

Cheers

Grease in the freehub.

Age.

And the tiny little volume control that goes up to 11.

Yes, 11. It's one louder.

How they have been rebuilt, some use grease, others use oil, thickness and quantity of lube on the pawls basically.

And the frame they're mounted to. Some bikes act as a sounding box.

Hope recommend an EP(extreme pressure)type grease because of the high loads at the tip of the pawls. The factory use Mobil 222, but it's not always easy to get in small quantities, we normally use Castrol Spheerol EP2 (about £2.50 for a 400g cartridge from your local Buck&Hickman trade counter).
