Forgive my ignorance but what is a narrow wide ring and what is it good for 😳

the teeth are narrow, fat, narrow, fat, narrow, fat

to match your chain which has wide, thin, wide, thin, wide gaps

the upshot is the chain stays on the ring whatever you do. So chain guides are not needed.

But you have to run just one ring (1x9, 1x10), with an even number of teeth (32, 34...)

Thinking of going back to a single ring set up as since I went 2x10 I think I've only gone into the larger ring a couple of times. Do you need to fit a different cassette with the narrow/wide setup ?

Aren't those the standard chainrings in the picture? I was expecting more of a difference between the teeth.

Nope. They're definitely Retainer rings. They are in the same packaging though. I'd have one if I hadn't just bought a raceface one.
