What cassette would people reccomend to avoid scoring the freehub body? I know XT is the lowest Shimano cassette Hope recommend, but what about Sram?

I use a SLX cassette on my Hope Evo 2's - alloy carrier, so shouldn't damage the body.

SRAM cassettes are OK if they have a one piece carrier for the top 6 or so gears.

No experience with SRAM cassettes, but even XT can get stuck as the two or three smallest sprockets aren't on the spider. Mine took a fair bit of huffing and puffing to loosen - in future I'll be removing the cassette at more regular intervals and/or getting a steel freehub when it needs replacing.

Cheers all. I think it's the higher gears that mangle the body prezet, the ones that don't have a carrier.

Why oh why oh why did Hope ditch the titanium freehub body? Why use a softer and less suitable material like aluminium for a part that takes a lot of stress??

Silly.

Might try to find a steel freehub body instead. I'll save money on cassettes that way too.

Anyone know if pro2 freehub bodies fit pro3 hubs?

I called Hope up and asked this question - SLX is fine as minimum spec
the trick is to torque the cassette lockring up correctly to prevent the cassette slipping thus causing the damage - so say Hope

It's essentially cosmetic damage, it's not really worth worrying about. It's not a new problem either, Pro2s just brought it to the masses. The only cassettes that will totally mitigate it are SRAM XX or XG999, the smaller sprockets will always dig in otherwise. SLX or above will help, but only to an extent!

yep, agreed...i don't think you can ever eliminate (no idea on SRAMXX or XG999) the 'damage' completely...correct cassette choice and fitting will limit it to cosmetic only

Can you tell hope that I do use a torque wrench and that my slx still cuts into the hub 🙄 . So every now and then I, somehow, mange to get them off the hub and give it a file. I have two steel ones waiting in the wings and will fit them when the aluminium ones give up the ghost.

meh. that's a bit like suggesting that tightening the top cap will stop a loose stem rotating.

It's all bollocks, I've been using deore or Sram PG950 cassettes for ten years on hope hubs and the freehubs are still working just fine thanks.

PG950 currently £17.50 at Merlin, 10% off for VIP club members too

As far as I'm aware it's almost impossible to get a cassette with all rings on a carrier, even the XT's only manage to get 6 of the 9 rings on it's carrier.

Cos alu is lighter and cheaper, and lots of us cope just fine.

Correct, except the XX and XG999, as I said above.
