The bike came with hope cranks and chain device, i'd like to remove the chain devices, as i've never needed one before on a 1x setup and it would make it easier to clean etc. I've watched the hope video, which seems to undo the petal whatknot with no trouble, but the instructions say 70nm or something insane. I've a 19mm ring spanner thats not very long and a 300mm long adjustable, i cant get it to shift and i'm worried about the whole thing slipping and doing it or me damage!
Do i need to buy a socket set with a long arm driver or is there something I can do with what i've got. How does anyone else shift it?
I'd go invest in something with a bit more leverage. I was using a 18" breaker bar to get my spiderless ring fitted with the lock ring torqued to spec!
If you can find a surface that wont scratch things up, I find leaving the pedal on and putting weight on that with a foot to hold it steady lets you get more effort on the lock ring without fear of it moving around.
Do you have the crankset specific tools shown in the video and the instructions?
Yes i have the specific tools. The key item being the petal shaped tool that fits a 19mm socket, which i don't have, only a small socket set which goes up to 17mm from memory.
I'd buy a 19mm socket.
You could try using your 19mm ring spanner on the Hope tool. If you need more leverage you could slide something like an old seat post/handlebar over the other end of the ring spanner. That might slip of and/or round the tool end.
