Hi
So my Pivot mach 4 came with a press fit BB (alarm bells rang but thought it was a bargain so sod it) it was also a Hope so again thought let's do it now 3 hours in and it's started making a creaking noise.
I've always stayed away from a press fit BB so I know nothing has anyone else fixed this problem? Is there an adapter to press in that means you can run a standard threaded BB? I only ask as I have an adapter on my Cannondale bb30 and I run threaded
Any advice warmly welcome
Thanks
What cranks? If they're 24mm, then it's a screw type bottom bracket and tightening it up might sort it. If it's 30mm then the bottom bracket is just bearings and disposable machined cups/spacers.
You can have press-fit bbs for 24mm crank axles (known as BB92). Which I think is what the Pivot has.
It is said that (re-)installing the bearings with some bearing cement helps, but I haven't tried that.
You can also replace the press-in cups with a metal screw-together arrangement into which bearings are pushed just like with screw-in cups. Wheels Mfg, Hope and others make them. I have the Wheels one on my Slash and it works OK. I still get slight creakage but that is because I am running GXP cranks, in which the left hand end of the axle is prone to creak inside the bearing on account of the design not being so clever.
It's a 24mm as I'm running an XT crank strangely enough since posting this the creak has disappeared??
How wet was your last ride? I’ve had water and mud cure all kinds of creaks! 😁
Can be worth popping things out and giving everything a clean before reinstalling it properly. If as I read it you have the hope thread together version, is it possible it’s worked ever so slightly loose? My OHs pivot has been a lot better since I fitted a wheels manufacturing thread together bb, but it still needs tweaking maybe once a year if it starts to creak.
Funnily enough slackalice it was a pretty wet ride think I will leave it if the creak comes back I will take the sound advice of swanny, thanks all
