Is the route generally suited to a 1x9 set up on a MTB? Im fine with that gearing generally despite having only average fitness, but the hills are bigger down there to what im used to. Not done HONC before and im thinking i might put a front mech on if the climbs are long and steep.

people do it on anything from 1 to 30 gears, some of the climbs are long, some of them are steep, if you're fine on that gearing normally you'll be fine on the HONC

Will be fine. Personally I'd want a big ring and some fast tyres for all the flat road bits.

You'll be absolutely fine, I SS'd last year as did many other people and I will again this year.

I'm a HONC virgin* and will be chilling on a single speed, you'll be fine with gear dangly bits

*and incredibly slow and unfit with all the technical riding ability of a kitten in a sack at the bottom of a canal
