I was shocked at the price of a chain guide... so I made one on the cheap.

This cost £15.

DMR hinge clamp £2.69
E Thirteen replacement upper slider £11.66
Then a long bolt and a couple of nuts from the hardware shop.

Looks decent enough, how's it perform?

Looks good but I'd be concerned that it wasn't stiff enough or that the bolt/cage might rotate - usually they're pretty sensitive to positioning if you want to avoid chain rub.

How's it actually working in practice?

Superstar one costs similar and only needs one bolt changing to make the clamp super solid

'Made one' is pushing it a bit. You bought parts specifically for guiding chains and bolted them together perhaps?
Still, not wanting to wazz on your chips...

After a week of testing I can say it works very well.

Kayak23, you are wazzing on my chips a bit. I may just have bought a seat tube clamp and a replacement guide, but... I think my ability to use a bolt and two nuts to perfectly space and secure this guide in place is worthy of commendation.

I'd like to see you do a better job for less!
