[#2757497]

A friend of mine is a roady and looking to get a mountain bike so that he can start riding more cross country/off road cycle routes. He's 6ft 3 so I'm guessing will need a 21"/23" frame? It really doesn't need to be anything flash; front suspension, reasonable gears brakes etc. Max spend of £300.

A second hand bike would be ideal if anyone can help out? We're based in Newcastle.

Cheers

20/21" most likely. 23" are almost always too big for me @ 6'5"

Put a wanted ad up in the classifieds.

Could try pink bike, just be aware there are lots of timewasters on there.

clubber, each to his own. I'm 6'2 and ride a 20".

Patti, second-hand is the way to go. I'm just doing something very similar, building an equally large size bike as a "starter" mtb for my bro-in-law. He's also large (6'3") and I'm also in the north east. spooky!

I've sourced bits mainly from this forum and also from a few mates. Budget was £500, it looks like it's going to cost about £400, but i could bring it down a bit more, but wanted a decent frame and wheelset for starters. I couldn't find any second-hand full bikes at a decent size, hence buying the frame and getting the bits to go on it.

Here's a breakdown of what I've bought:
22" Kona Hoss Deluxe frame with Hope headset and seatpost: £130
Rockshox Recon forks: £75
Full Deore (octalink)transmission: £65
Deore/Hope hubs on Mavic 321 rims: £85
Shimano brakes (my old XT/Hone) £50

You should be able to get similar, if you don't get the Hope stuff, you'll save at least £50.

each to their own indeed. i'm 6'3 and both my bikes are 17" frames. Probably highly dependant on the type of riding you do, I'd not like a gate under me for a lot of the trails I ride, but would be happy with one if I was just pottering round the downs
